Slow network response time from XP to a Win98 machine - 2nd post

My company has a four user peer to peer network running three Windows 98
and one XP machines. Our
protocol is TCP/IP and all users are connected through a switch. One machine
is used as the file store for a large number (over 7000) of Word files with
shared access for all users. I recently added a new PC that is running
Windows XP Pro. When accessing the shared file directory to add or open a
file, the time it takes to display the folder contents from this XP machine
is dramatically slower than from the 98 machines. I've mapped to the folder
and when I double click to open it, a flashlight icon appears and it takes a
full 30 seconds to display the folder contents. This only occurs from my XP
machine. All other network function appear to be working fine from this same
machine. When performing a similar action from a Windows 98 machine, the
folder contents are displayed almost instantaneously. Why is this happening
from the XP machine and how can I improve access time? Thanks for your help

Neil, I'm about to add xp machines to our 98 network (sounds like the same setup you've got.) Have you found any resolution to your slowness problem? Any advice before I leap in?
