Slow network issues

I've recently installed a xp pro fileserver which is accessed by other xp
pro workstations. The previous file server was windows 2k. Since the
migration to the new box, any network transactions to or from the server are
rather S-L-O-W, slow enough to have users griping. The hardware is brand
new current stuff. The old 2k box was a p3 system. The new box is
exponentially "better" but the network transaction speed is much worse. All
systems have latest sp installed - the network is p2p (no domain just a
workgroup). Any advice on how to get things moving would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Part of the issue was resolved when SP2 was installed on the workstation
that saw the most marked decrease in network performance. There was a
ZeroKnowledge product installed that was causing issues as well. At first,
I thought that the system had a virus as the Auto Updates tab wouldn't show
on system properties nor were they working. Once the ZeroKnowledge
"Freedom" product was removed, BAM! Auto Updates were back and functioning
properly. The lesson here? Stuff works better when systems are current
with updates and patches. BTW: this was the bosses system that was slow and
now it is all good! :)
