Slow network access only when using network place shortcut.

John Warren

Server and workstation configuration:

WindowsXP work stations with McAfee ASAP virus checking.

Windows2003 Servers

The problem:

I have found that if users access folders on the file
server by adding a network place shortcut the speed that
they display contence of folders is MUCH slower (about 8
to 10 times slower) than had they followed the domain tree
to the server and select the folder.

We have tested this on several systems and always get the
same result.

Anyone have any ideas?

Are the XP workstations using the servers IP address as a
DNS address? If not then they take alot longer to resolve
the IP through netbios. Try that.
