Slow mouse?

I wonder if someone could help with this;

The mouse is somewhat slow, I've been into the control panel, and set
motion to fast but that doesn't help much (if I set it to slow it'll
take 10 minuttes to get it across the screen).

Its also just a bit irratic; its like when ever the computer needs to
read/write to the harddrive the task that moves the mouse point just
gets a down grade.

I've tried reinstalling windows, no help there.

I've tried with 4 different mice, 3 usb opticals and one PS2 ball mouse.

And if someone says drivers, there were no drivers with any of the mice
and on the face of it, it seems XP just recognize them.

Do USB mice need IRQ's assigned? Doesn't seem like it has any.

Is there a windows task who moves the mouse pointer? Can it be given a
higher priority?

Pete B, did you figure out your mouse problem? I am having the same problems
with my mouse. I have tried to change settings in the control panel and I
have tried to update the driver which is already updated. What should I do
now?
