slow login to win2000 adv. server

When we installed new windows XP and Windows 2000
workstations on our network we are experiencing very slow
logins to domain controller. On XP it can take as long as
5 minutes and on 2000 about 2 minutes. But if you login
with a windows 98 workstation it is very fast. Does anyone
know what could cause this? I have searched microsoft
knowledgebase unsucsessfully. A Dell tech support person
told me he had seen the fix on microsoft.com but couldnt
remember what it was. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Try to see if your DNS server is properly installed and configured. Also see if you entered correct "Primary DNS server" address on your Windows XP clients.

Windows 98 uses NetBIOS to log on domain so it should be fast

Windows XP can be problematic if it is not configured to use DNS or DNS service have some wrong informatios.

Your AD clients must point to your AD DNS server. See:
