Slow IDE drive

Hi,
I have just installed XP x64 on my new hardwareb and am running 2 SATA
connected drives in IDE mode. One drive seems very slow and I noticed it is
now in PIO mode. I read all about KB817472 and would like to know if the
fix on offer actually cures this or is there more to the problem as it
appears to have started many years ago.
I tried the workaround and this was good for 2 boots but after it returned
to PIO.

David

Another way to investigate your hard drive is to use HD Tune.

Try HD Tune only gives information and does not fix any
problems.

Download and run it and see what it turns up. You want HD Tune
(freeware) version 2.55 not HD Tune Pro (not Freeware) version 3.00.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

Hope this helps.

Why IDE mode, why not RAID or in SATA values,by default SATA is disabled
in the BIOS,so is RAID.If you have RAID,enter BIOS & configure a RAID set,or
SATA uses 'Enhanced" mode (or similiar),set in advanced chipset
configuration,
kb81000 issues are years old.You failed to tell what brand of MB you have,
however, read the owners manual,go to intel or amd web site & read about youre
hardware & what it offers...

Hi andrew,
looks like my drive may be on the way out.

I have a new ASrock N68PV-GS board (Nvidia)
I have been reading that using anything above IDE does not give you much
gain in performance and people seem to say it is not worth the change. I am
a bit out of touch with the latest trends now I have retired but try to keep
up.
I will try the RAID setting.

Regards,
David
