slow dsl - possible virus?

Y

Yup

I ran a program that I had unzipped off an old backup cd. The program
ran fine, but when I erased it from the hard-disk, Explorer hung and I
had to restart Windows 98. Stupidly, I didn't have an antivirus
installed. When I rebooted, the computer ran slower and most
significantly my DSL connection was much slower (about 1/10th the
normal speed).

Concerned that I had a virus, I installed AVG and did a system scan. I
also ran Panda's online scan. Nothing came up. I scanned the backup cd
as well, and still nothing. However, the dsl connection is still slow.
I did a registry clean with jv16powertools, but to no avail.

I'm still concerned about the possibility of there being a virus on my
computer. I don't want to do a fresh install. Is is possible that a
virus could have infected the boot partition (or something else) that
the antivirus programs (installed after the possible infection) can't
see?

What are my options?

Any help would be appreciated.

Viruses and spy, mal and ad ware are different things. So AV's may not
detect the other kinds of garbage that can get on your system. It is
possible you may have parasites, spy, mal or adware on your system causing
the problem. Download, install, update the programs to be sure they have the
latest definitions, then run the programs below. They are free and very
effective. Be sure to run both SpyBot and Adaware, as what one does not
detect the other may. Follow the directions carefully:

SpyBot Search & Destroy: Free

or
http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

AdAware: Free
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
or

It might also be a good idea to have an on-demand AV on your hard drive to
run from DOS, as some viruses and other types of scumware can not be removed
with Windows in use. Check here:

F-Prot - Home Use: Free

You might want to run this netstat viewer to see what ports are being
used, in case you've been compromised by a RAT using you as a zombie for
who knows what. http://www.trojanhunter.com/products/NetstatViewer.zip
Read about it here:

You didn't say what kind of program was on the CD. It's possible that it
changed registry settings in such a way as to slow down your connection.
Go to www.broadbandreports.com and look into the tweaks.

a boot infector affecting your dsl speed is unlikely... more likely
it's a more conventional worm/virus that simply isn't detected yet by
the products you've tried so far...

without a suspect file to send in for analysis i would first take a
look at the fact that your dsl is slow - it may be slow because
something is using up your bandwidth... tcpview from
http://www.sysinternals.com can show you which processes are using
ports and therefore which one(s) may be affecting your dsl speed...
there may well be plenty of legitimate entries though (like your web
browser or msn messenger or your email client, etc)... if there are any
that you can't rule out as a cause of the problem you should send it to
an av developer for analysis...
