slow closure of programs

When I go to shut down a program or browser it closes very slowlyfolding fro
the top of the screen to the bottom in jerky movements, normally things open
and close in a flash. What could be causing this?

win xp sp2
1.2ghz AMD Athlon
30gb HDD
1gb DDRAM
nvidia tnt2 64mb
