My son's computer messed up so I did a fresh win xp pro intstall. Now it
takes for ever to boot. I flashed latest bios, ran chkdsk, fixmbr,
fixboot, boot rebuild from recovery console. No Help. I get a black screen
saying loading setup that I never used to get. I never experienced a slow
boot in the past with the computer. Dell
p3 512 mb 20gig. No software loaded either. I also tried reinstalling xp
again to see if that corected problem. It didn't. Help if you can.

Time to look at your hardware.

Good question. Unfortunately, you'll have to test each one individually.
You could start with http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp.
That said, when you installed XP, did you have a printer, camera or any
other peripheral connected besides the mouse, keyboard and monitor? Did
you do a clean up/ChkDsk/Defrag after installing XP and all the updates?

What model Dell are you using?

Check that all the device drivers are up to date and are supported. Sound
like you are installing a retail pro onto an older computer. Get the correct
drivers from the OEM if you don't have them on cd.

dell 4100 this is the same xp pro os that was on the computer in the past
with zero problems. My granddaughter deleted some things she shouldn't have
and that is why I reinstalled.

Device drivers will cause this type of problem.

What updates does the Windows XP disk include? It can be advisable
to sort out device drivers before adding further Windows updates.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

I suggest you look at Warning and Error Reports in the System and
Application logs of Event Viewer at the time of the last boot and post
copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.
