Slow Boot Up Problem

Help!

I just did a clean install of XP due to a Napster nightmare. I have all of
the updates and Norton Internet Security 2004 installed.

The time between the WELCOME and the desktop is about 1 to 2 minutes. What
is causing this? It is like it is hung up but once past, the system runs
fine.

This is crazy considering I just installed from a fresh copy.

Thanks,
Brian

I had a similar problem until the comp broke and I had to re-install.
There was some sort of conflict between Norton AV, Zone Alarm and DSL
PPOE when starting up an account as they appeared to be fighting each
other for processor time. They all eventually started but did so in bits
and pieces. Norton's icon would appear first in the task bar but with a
red X through it, then ZA would appear briefly but not start. The
telephone icon would finally come up and then the others would
eventually become active. After an actual reboot it was iffy if DSL was
really available even though it showed as active and claimed to be
online. This time I made sure Norton was installed first so it starts
first. That seems to have cured the problem.

I was having the same problem with Windows XP Pro
pausing for an extended time between the boot and
logon screens, then only getting a desktop/wallpaper
with no taskbar or icons for approx. 2 minutes. I
reinstalled the OS and programs for it to happen
again and again. Then I started using services.msc
to systematically disable each entry then restart.
I found that both Norton Anti Virus 2003 and 2004 were
the cause of the slowdowns. After disabling every
Norton service using services.msc and startups using
mscong my computer boots normally. Oh, and yes I can
still do virus scans and have run NAV, ad-aware 6,
Spybot S&D, and even F-Prot. My system is clean. It
was NAV.

I had the same problem and ended up reinstalling XP a
couple of times before I did the following:

I unchecked everything in the startup menu of msconfig
one at a time rebooting with each uncheck. I found that
when I unchecked the last item attributed to Norton AV
2003 and rebooted, my system started up close to normal
(faster). I started up services.msc from the run command
in the start menu and then unchecked anything to do with
Norton AV or Symantec and whoala....my system was finally
back to normal. Just to double check I rechecked anything
to do with Norton AV and my computer was starting up slow
again (1-2 min. between welcome and login screens and
only the background/wallpaper for 1-2 min. with no
taskbar or icons). Wow, Norton AV was the cause!

I uninstalled Norton AV 2003 upgraded to 2004, everthing
ok for about a week, then one day.....the same problem.
Uninstalled Norton AV 2004 then installed Norton
Systemworks Pro 2003, then one day.......you get the
idea. Something in the main Norton shell is not running
correctly. Unfortunately, if you uncheck all the Norton
startups and services, autoprotect and email don't won't
work.

If anyone has an idea how to make any of these Norton
Products leave the bootup process alone I would
appreciate it. Also, if you can confirm my findings I
would like to have something to send to those bastards at
Symantec. Their response is always, "the problem lies
with your operating system or another program".
