I have a mixture of photographs on my slide show both
from my digital camera and those I have scanned on when I
ask for view slide show the scanned photographs are not
shown as a full image on the screen

Why

How can I make them large have tried everything

You can't.
Here is how it works.
Right click on your desktop and click on Properties.
In the opening window, click on the Settings tab.
Look at your screen resolution. You will see something like:
1280 x 1024 (or some other number depending on the screen you have)
This is how many pixels your screen is displaying. If you multiply one
number by the other you get a total of 1.3 megapixels
Now, right click on one of your photo or scan file and click on Properties.
A window will open. Click on the Picture tab and look at the resolution. You
will see some numbers like:
2048 x 1360 or
640 x 480 or
any other numbers.
If you see something like 640 x 480, you do not have enough pixels to fill
your screen. Trying to enlarge this to fill your screen will result in a
very poor display.
If you see 2048 x 1360, you have more pixels than needed to fit your screen.
XP will resized this down to fill your screen as best it can (there may be
some cropping to fit the aspect ratio of your screen) but the picture will
look great at full screen.
