Doc,
If you mean you want to apply the in-built designs. Select the slides in the
thumbnail view on the left of your screen (ctrl+click to select more than
one thumbnail). In the slide design taskpane click on the listarrow next to
the design you want to apply and choose apply to selected slides. Repeat the
process if necessary.
If you mean make the slide designs yourself, go to View - Master - Slide
master - on the master toolbar click the insert new master button (first),
you can make several if needed. Give them the colour and background you need
(Format - Background - be sure to choose apply and not apply to all). Apply
using the slide design task pane, you will find all the masters at the top
of the pane under the section used in this presentation. Again click on the
listarrow next to the design and choose apply to selected slides.

teacher,
Go to View - in the presentation views group click Slide master - on the
slide master tab in the edit master group, click insert slide master, every
slide master will come with 9 different slide layouts. You can give any
slide master it's own background, or you can give the individual slide
layouts a background whichever you need.
Do give the slide master a background on the slide master tab in the
background group, click background styles, chose between the 12 styles
offered, or click edit background at the bottom and make your own.
Does this help?
