Slave drive won't show up

I have added a slave drive to my xp system, attempting to recover some
data from it. With the BIOS set to auto, it detects:
WDG_EC61604H$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_.

The first portion of ID reflects the drive, but I'm not sure what to
akke of all the $.

The device shows in Control Panel/System/Device Manager as:

IDE\DISKWDG_EC61604H$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_$_64.0=P47\4457572D33543637303632373435203620242024

and says it's working properly.

However, the drive does not show in Windows Explorer.

I've attempted to get the computer to recognize the device through
Admin/Computer management/Disk Management, but the wizard returns an
failure message and the little graphical thing shows the Master
correctly as a 114 Gig Healthy, but my 12 Gig slave shows up as 1696.94
gigs unallocated. Will initializing/coneverting.etc render the entire
drive blank and defeat the entire purpose of trying to retrieve a few files?

I've attempted salving other drives in other op sys before with good
results; this has me stumped...and nervous.

thnx

i have never come across the $_ bit beofre and therfore conserns me. i would
be taking the drive back and getting a refund or replacment drive.

also is the IDE cable and jumper settings set correctly.
Is your power supply able to cope with all the drives. 4 drives should run
on a 240V power supply, guessing you dont have a 3D video card wich requires
a seprate power connection to the actual AGP slot or PCI slot.

Hi,

Have you run a drive diagnostic on the disk yet? While some parts may read
ok, some may be corrupted and unsalvageable. Before you do anything, you
want to know the state of the drive, and the best tool for this is a drive
diagnostic from the manufacturer of the hard drive (and certainly not disk
management in Windows).
