A friend of mine has the following problem with Skype which he has asked
me to post here for him, can you help me to help him please.

He says "Skype worked fine with on-board Soundmax sound card which is
installed in Dell pc with Windows XP Home.
Installing a second pro-type card, EMU 0404, has caused SKype problems,
with gross distortion on incoming voice.
Win XP allows both cards to run, but Skype is obviously apparently
through the EMU card. There doesn't seem to be any way in "options" to
set Skype to select the Soundmax; most software allows either to be
selected - is there any way around this."

Thank you for any help you can give please.

Hi Derrick,

The likely solution would be to disable the onboard sound, as it is
conflicting with the after-market card. He should be able to do this in the
system BIOS, otherwise he may need to open the case and move a jumper.

My friend Eugene replies to you as follows:-

"Re replies, I can easily disable the Soundmax old card, but my aim is
to keep both running. One reason is because the new card has no mic
input. So the problem is - how to get Skype to "see" the old cards"

Incidentally he is also most grateful for your response Rck, it remains
to be seen now if he can "persuade" Skype to "see" to old card.

Hope you can help further.

Hi Derrick,

First, have him see if it will work properly with the onboard disabled. If
it does, then it's a conflict between it and the new card. Chances are good
that there is not going to be any resolution to it, as they generally will
not coexist. If it does not function with just the new card, then there is a
problem with it and Skype, and the best source for further assistance is
going to be Skype.

Hi Rick.

Thank you again on behalf of Eugene, he may be able to return the
compliment sometime as his "expertise" is in sound recording and music,
hence the new sound card which I understand is very good for music. He
lives in Dublin, my old place, and we talk about IT and music via Skype
and he likes to think his technology is ahead of mine. Needless to say I
dispute that and I am pretending to enjoy his fall from grace in the
disastrous purchase of this all singing dancing new sound card which has
effectively muted his sound so that he cannot hear me. I know its not at
my end because I can be heard very clearly by all my other contacts.
Having said that I now miss our daily chats and I would like to see him
resolve his problem ASAP.
Finally, I got this solution in the SKYPE forum from "Gladiator" and if
I may I attach it here for what its worth.

"SKYPE-->Tools-->Options-->Sound Devices-->Audio in + out-->(drop down)
to sound card he wants to use-->Save"

My friend has just emailed me as follows...

"I hadn't got the "options" item under Skype "Tools", so I downloaded
latest version and it does have these options, so I was able to select
the old card. So we will find out next time whether or not his works.
Regards and thanks for your help,
Eugene"

Lets see if that solves his problem tomorrow and I will come back if I
may with the outcome.

All my thanks,
