HI All,
We're running 2K AD standard edition. Is it possible to upgrade it to 2008
AD directly? Also, we're going to upgrade Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2007
after the AD upgraded. Please advice.
Thanks,
Roger

Hello rq,

For server 2008 is it not possible to do an inplace upgrade from server 2000
(needs at least 2003 SP1), but you can add the 2008 server as additional
DC to the domain after preparing the forest/domain with adprep /forestprep
adprep /domainprep and adprep /domainprep /gpprep from the 2008 disk against
the schema master from the domain.

For exchange on server 2008 you need at least exchange 2007 SP1

Hi Meinolf,
Thanks for your help. I'm going to add a new 2008 server as a 2K AD member
server then promot it to DC. Eventually I'll remove all old 2K DCs and keep
two or three 2008 or 2003 DCs.
We have 5 2003 servers as the member server in 2K domain now.
Thanks again!
Roger

Hello rq,

Do not forget to move, NOT seize, the FSMO roles to one existing DC in your
domain before demoting the old ones and also make at least one DC Global
catalog server. If you have single forest single domain make all DC's Global
catalog server.

Do you mean let new 2008 DC takes over the FSMO role from the old 2KDC before
demoting it?

Hello rq,

Yes, the FSMO roles MUST be on a domain. If you have only 2 DC's the move
goes during the demoting process, but if you have more DC's you have to move
them by hand.

And even if it does happen automatically it is always best
for YOU to choose the new role holder(s) and more
importantly to be CERTAIN that the roles were properly
moved.

Do it manually -- if you want something done right, do it yourself.
