Skin bugs

W

Will Pittenger

My XP Pro machine has a problem where sometimes after certain types of
crashes or upgrades, the next time I boot (immediately afterwards) Windows
fails to skin itself properly. Is this a known XP issue? Is there a fix or
workaround? Currently, I have to reboot to fix the problem.

Also, I have heard that when you turn on or off your skin, Windows resets
the taskbar height (on horizontal taskbars) to 1. This is a real problem
for WindowBlinds users as that products switches you into and out of skin
mode with every boot. (I gave up on WindowBlinds mostly for that reason.)
Is there a fix for this forthcoming? One of my reactions was to switch to a
vertical taskbar, which seems immune.

That's what they said. However, my suggestion then was before switching the
skin mode, that they memorize the taskbar size, do their thing, and then set
the taskbar back. The tricky part is that we are not just talking about the
height, but all of the locations of your launch bars.

It was a problem in Windows, not in WB. I'll send you a picute of my
desktop, if that's ok.

| I was using 3.x. I think that Stardock may have forced the issue by
| changing that when they reinitialize. It also happened when you switched
| skins.

Well check out WB 4.1 for XP. Everything stays put, I have QL and address bar on the bottom row, the top row for open windows and WMP 9 tool bar.

Not at this time. Since I started using StyleXP rather than WB, my
ObjectDesktop subscription expired. Besides, since the Windows skin code is
loaded even if you are not using it, StyleXP (a program that tricks Windows
into accepting unsigned skins) uses less overhead. I may switch later, but
I need more money first.

The other thing is that I was hoping someone would respond to the other half
of my original post in this thread. No one has.

Well, you kind of answered that question yourself when you wrote that you are using StyleXP. Check their site for any FAQs.

I do not think that they are the problem as they load nothing unless you are
switching skins.
