Size of IME on screen

The size of candidate characters using Windows XP IME (Chinese PRC) is
uncomfortably small. It is almost impossible to decipher complex
Chinese characters. How can I increase the size of the IME display
without reducing the screen resolution to an unworkably low level?

I discovered a work-around:

1. Increase screen resolution to maximum.
2. Increase font resolution to (custom) 200dpi.

This allowed the application (Adobe InDesign) to work at high
resolution but with all Windows text (in dialogs, menus and (hooray)
IME) at a legible size. The InDesign dialogs and toolbar are, however,
tiny but you can't have everything!
