Single User Setup

How do I set up my computer for a single user? User Accounts shows me as the only user and Guest Logon is disabled however. . .
Issue 1) When I try to delete a file in Windows Explorer a message pops up that tells me I can't delete it because someone else is using it. This even happens when I mistakenly click 'New Folder' on the file menu then try to delete it.
Issue 2) At the Windows Welcome screen a message appears that tells me I can't sign-in because I'm not authorized to use my computer. I click OK, the message goes away and my icon appears. How do I get rid of the annoying error message
Issue 3) Docs and settings has folders for a default user, an administrative user and me. If I'm the administrator as well as the default user and the only user it appears one file is enough. Can these be combined to one user?

How do I set up my computer for a single user?

I have a similar prob.

No probs booting, signing, using xpro. Have one admin, and guest is
disabled.

BUT all the duplicate files are driving me nuts AND I can never find
anything!

Not to mention the darn file name strings are so long, they 'hog' all
windows and can't read 'em without scrolling through them: ie zip
program, save as, send files, etc.

And currently have a fairly small HD

I Have: (Most seems to be just duplicate files) And do I really need
those 'Windows' folders???

My Docs
Documents&Settings
All Users
All Users, Windows
Default User
Default User, Windows
(my name)
User

Now, I did a clean install, but did transfer an entire copy of old C
drive after install.

There is ONLY ME! I am the ONLY user on this pc. I would like to
just have all under MY DOCS.

How can I change this file system???

Oh, I forgot.

I also have:

## So do I. The file system SUCKS bigtime. Seems like it's 50 clicks to
find anything.
No probs booting, signing, using xpro. Have one admin, and guest is
disabled.

## Amen! And the Find feature locks up, is slower than a three legged
turtle, doesn't find a file that may be right on the desktop....
( Why did they mess with the FF&F that works so well on W98?
Not to mention the darn file name strings are so long, they 'hog' all

program, save as, send files, etc.

## You got it my friend! It's CRAZY!
And currently have a fairly small HD
I Have: (Most seems to be just duplicate files) And do I really need
those 'Windows' folders???

## I think that's were the files actually reside - all the confusing
duplicates in the Documents folders are shortcuts that cause more LOST TIME
than anything else.

## You can't - we're all screwed. :-( We'll have to live with it and
hope Gate's sw writers get a CLUE!

I think XP should be renamed 'Windows MM (Micro-Management).' Wish Gates and company would give us a little credit for at least half a brain. Anyone brave enough to delete some of these Docs & Settings 'folks' using our computers and see what happens? Can always use restore to put them back.

Would also like to get rid of that shared files folder, however . . . Windows MM thinks I need it for those 'other folks' with files in my Docs & Settings. I know just griping about this won't do any good, but it does keep me from giving my computer a good slap in the face.

If any one comes up with a solution to 'single user' successfully using XP, it is appreciated.

LOL. Perhaps we should start a win xpro singles Yahoogroup! And/Or a
'stop computer abuse' list???

The thing I don't understand the MOST is the lack of MVP input re this
prob...

try this:

Pay no attention to how xp is set up to start with. Just delete and
rearrange everything back to win 98 or win me and see what happens.

I did that pretty much and it worked ok except xp complained a lot about
missing this and missing that.

You tend to see more the MVP's in the help_support Newsgroup. You may get an
answer in there. I keep checking to see if we've had a reply in here, I
can't believe that everyone else has all these folders, just know we didn't
create them though so XP must have. Having had my laptop for Christmas and
already once had to format Hard Drive and reinstall XP I haven't got the
courage to delete any!! Wouldn't know which ones to delete.

Yes, you are using a MULTI-USER operating system unlike Windows 9x.

My Docs
Documents&Settings
All Users
All Users, Windows
Default User
Default User, Windows
(my name)
User

These are NOT users. But they are used to either set up NEW users
(contents of Default User is copied to the New Users profile!), or
share settings (All Users) such as the Desktop and the Start Menu.
Leave these folders alone.

Go back to Windows 98.

Peter - Thank you for posting your information. Perhaps, there were folks out there that didn't know all those users in D & S were NOT users. However, I believe you miss the point. There are NO NEW users on this computer, nor will there be any. By choice, my computer is not common property. I am interested in knowing if there is a way to set up my computer for ONE user, only, without all this sharing stuff. I assume there isn't
Please don't adivise me to go back to 98. I shouldn't need to do that just because I chose to have exclusive rights to my computer. I understand about the politically correctness of 'sharing, nowadays, however MS gimped when they left out those of us who are single users
Again, thanks for you contribution.

Endnote: Why on earth is there a need for Desktop and Start Menu to have access to an All User file for a single user? I agree, MS gimped when they assumed all computers were common property. If they can make a home edition and a professional edition, surely they can make an individual user edition without sacrificing any of the 'gingerbread.'

I just want to be able to access my folders quickly and in one place. It
looks like that is too much to ask. XP like to portray itself as easy to use
and user friendly. I think 'single users' would question those points. I
like it generally, love System Restore but find this business with the same
files in many places such a pain!!!

If it bothers you so much why not just make them 'Hidden Folders" and be
sure to uncheck show hidden folders in Folder Options, Then you simply won't
see them and get on to more important things.

Thanks for that I didn't realise I could 'make' some folder hidden, I
thought the system automatically did that and it wasn't an option for the
user.

Hide the folders. LOL. Looking at the folders is not the problem. Then we REALLY couldn't find our folders. We are not talking about being bothered. If you failed to grasp the concept reread the messages, above. The question was, and still is, how do we set up XP so that a single user will find it user friendly?
