Simple question: How do I REALLY delete all of my e-mails?

D

Dan Ramsey

I'm getting ready to switch jobs, and I want to
permanently delete all of my e-mails off of my current
work PC. Obviously, I know that I need to first delete
everything into the "Deleted" folder, and then delete the
entire contents of that folder as well. BUT, I know that
there's also some place in memory that STILL retains
copies of all the deleted e-mails. So, my question is:

Where exactly is that repository of supposedly "deleted" e-
mails located and how/where do I go to TRULY "wipe it
clean"?

Thanks very much in advance for any help that you can
give.

Are you using an Exchange server or a pst-file?

Dan,

First of all, if there's backup of the mail server, you're probably screwed.
If you are on a Exchange server for exemple, everything is stocked on the
server; depending on how the network admin manage his data, all your e-mail
could be on a tape or somewhere else on the network. If you're using an
external SMTP service not managed by someone in your company, there's good
chance they don't keep a lot of backup of your mailbox.

On your side, the only way to truely remove all the data from your hard
drive would be to smash your drive with a hammer or something, since some
programs would allow the recovery of deleted files. There's no way you can
be 100% sure that your e-mails will be completly deleted, but removing them
from your deleted items is enough to prevent a lot of people from getting
this info.

Hope this help.
