Simple backup and burning

Frank K. Jensen

Hi guys

I'm looking for a back utility to backup documents, mails, adresses,
favorits, pictures and so on. It should be simple (as it is actually for my
folks), and it should be able to burn directly to CDR spanning several
disks. It should not pack the files, but just copy them so they can be
viewed directly from the disk with intact directory structure. It would be
cool if you could build jobs, so that when you want to backup say docs and
mails you just click docs og mails and thats it.

Best regards,
Frank

Thanks, but it doesn't really look like it's what I'm looking for.

Anyone else?

Best regards,

Frank, I will recommend SyncBack. By reading your description above I
feel that the program is exactly what you require. Do some
investigation and you will find that all of the functions you
requested are available in SyncBack. It is easy to set up and
different jobs can be run at the same time or at different times.

Thanks, I'll give it a go once more, but I don't really see how to burn
CDR's with SyncBack, without formating the disk to some special UDF format,
which I don't really know what is.

The UDF format is simply packet writing to an RW CD or DVD. You should
have received some sort of software with your drive that enables
formatting and writing to an RW disk. Adaptec or Nero both have TSRs
which load on boot and stays resident just to detect that sort of
event.

Nero calls their version InCD, Adaptec's is called DirectCD. If you
use RW disks then the CD is treated as just another drive and
read/write operations happen automatically. Attempting to go from InCD
to DirectCD, or vice versa, is fraught with difficulty I believe,

Here's a couple of programs that may work for you:

I believe you can do all this with BACK4WIN - the freeware version:
http://www.back4win.com/
This backup utility is reliable, and simple. Powerful arrangement of
backup size - spanning disks, predefined disk size to suit CDR CDRW
media, etc. Can restore from a disk which has lost the directory
reference (most ZIP programs cannot do this). Does not have 4Gb and
65535 file limit of other ZIP backup programs.
Logical, easy to use functions without annoying pop-up windows.
Optionally backup your data as an EXE file that can be expanded on most
machines without decompression software. Backups are labeled with a
unique easy-to-find timestamp. Various modes of backup operation
provide easier and faster ways of doing your backups, and much more.

Extensive Device Support - CDRW, DVDRW, Internal/External/Networked
Hard Drives, MO, Zip & Jazz, USB pen drives, Floppy, etc. Back4Win
Freeware targets home users, business users should consider the higher
spec Back4WinXP instead.

Simply Safe Backup
MAY do this as well -- it supports CD-DVD, but don't know if
compression is optional.
http://www.simplysafebackup.com/new_index.php?page=details.htm
It´s simple: Anyone can use this program, quickly and easily - from
the pc novice, to the busy Network Administrator! With the ability to
burn backups to CD & DVD or backup to tape, send backups to an FTP
server or (network) file (server) on the fly, a few clicks will give
you peace of mind without any hassle.
It´s safe: Choose our ultra secure backup file format, or an industry
standard (less secure) zip file. Simply Safe Backup offers data
encryption, compression AND the ability to burn backups to CD & DVD, or
write to tape on the fly! The FREE downloadable version is fully
functional and ready to go. The affordable Personal, Professional and
Corporate versions offer even greater power and flexibility. The
corporate version even runs on a domain controller.

It´s powerful: Back up to a (zip) file, a file server, a tape, FTP
server, CD or DVD; Split Data Files, Locate-Compare- Verify tools,
Perform Smart Backup, Perform Unattended Backups, 1-Click Windows NT
Service-Start-Stop, Backup & Restore Wizards, and much MORE! With the
MySQL backup agent, you can backup any number of MySQL servers and
databases with your backup job (unattended). Use the file
synchronization feature to synchronize files and folders before you
backup. You can maintain backup jobs with Backup Inventory, and keep up
to date with automated updates.

Peter's Backup
http://pbackup.sourceforge.net/summary.html
For users of Windows 95/98/2000/NT/XP, the solution to your backup
problems is here. Peter´s backup has many advantages over the backup
programs supplied with Windows.
You can back up your data files on to disk, diskette or CD. Peter´s
backup will keep track of file versions and disks. You can restore any
file to any previous version without having to know on which disk or in
which backup set it is located. You can create unlimited incremental
backups. This saves time, backups and restores are very fast.

NOTE:This program is intended for backing up your important documents.
I do not recommend backing up an entire disk. Files that are in use may
not be backed up and files that are being updated while the backup is
running will not be backed up correctly. Operating system files should
not be backed up with this program.

Handy Backup
http://backup.novosoft-us.com/
Handy Backup is an easy-to-use yet powerful backup program designed for
Windows 9x/NT/2000/Me/XP. It makes an automatic backup of your critical
data virtually to any type of storage media: hard or network drive,
CD-R/W, FTP or LAN. Special plugins are provided to facilitate the
backup of ICQ, system registry and MS Outlook data. Strong file
encryption and multichoice zip compression on the fly as well as many
other useful features will protect your valuable data. All backup
activities are notified into a log file. Detailed online help is
available.

After reading there "the Shareware version (with more features)" I
suspect that a great many of those features are NOT available in the
freeware version. Such as backing up to DVD. There is also a
conspicuous absence of info about restoring the backup it does. I
would guess that one would NOT have a bootable system after
restoring from this program.
Simply Safe Backup

"limited to 40,000 files in a single backup volume."
