silverfast hijacked minolta registry entry??

Today I turned on my neglected Minolta scanner and found that none of
my preferences or presets were showing up. The "Help" button gave me a
"@@@@" window, and the file type dropdown list in the Scan window was
empty (which makes it considerably harder to save a file). It seemed
pretty obvious that there was a missing pointer of some sort to the
resources, but I couldn't think of anything I'd done to cause such a
problem. Finally I checked the registry. Under
LocalMachine\Software\Minolta, there was an entry for my Silverfast
demo directory. I changed it to the Dimage Scan location and (of
course) everything started showing up properly in the Minolta utility.

Anyone else ever encounter this? The demo version I have installed is
6.4.2r.2b, which isn't the latest...maybe there was an installation bug
specific to this release. Now I'm a bit hesitant to try out the latest
version. :)

I have been using a 5400 with 1.15 of the Minolta software for a few
years. The other day I downloaded the latest demo version of Silverfast.
I tried Silverfast but found it combersome.

When I returned to the Minolta software, it was damaged in the same way
as reported above.

I removed both Silverfast and the Minolta software, then reinstalled
the Minolta software.

Unfortunately, the 5400 no longer initializes. The software can tell if
the 5400 is on but that's about it. No more clicks and whirrs.
I installed the software and 5400 on another XP machine. It seemed to
initialize but errored out before I could scan anything. I downloaded
Vuescan but it doesn't work either.

I find it suspicious that the 5400 chose this time to die.

If the Minolta software is using twain , make sure to go to the \twain,
\twain32 directories and delete the entries for minolta and silverfast.
Also, look for Twunk and Twunk 32 and delete those entries. Then,
re-install the software.

Also, do a search in the registry for minolta entries and delete them
before re-installing.

It also would not hurt to do a Checkdisk (win) run on the drive to
eliminate that issue. Most likely, the twain/twunk files are fouled up.

i used to have this problem with Microtek all the time.

I thought my 5400 was dead but apparently there are signs of life.
I was able to scan a few images until the 5400 failed to respond to
the EJECT button.

Are there any points that can be oiled or something?
I have an Epson 4490 but it is not tolerant of warped film.
