Sign In to Vista Communty

B

Brian

I've been trying to post a question at Windows Vista Community but cannot
create a "new" thread. I'm not even sure if I am properly signed in because
everytime I sign in it doesn't seem to register although if I try again I
get a blank screen and then back to Community screen. I see posts where
others have had similar problems but I have not yet seen a solution. I'm
starting to think people can't post solutions for the same reason I can't
submit questions. Is Windows Vista Community working?????

(PS....I did get in once a few days ago but can't now???)

Thanks,

bj

Your using Windows Mail to view the newsgroups.

You don't necessarily need to use the 'Community' features to post and reply
to messages. The newsgroup servers were having problems recently with users
trying to login through Windows Mail, but they appear to be fixed now.

If you still have problems and you do not want to see any prompts about
logging in when you post a message, go to Tools/Options/General Tab and
remove the check mark from the 'Use newsgroup message rating features'
option.

You seem to be doing okay with WinMail.

If for some reason you really want to do it with IE, are you getting the
yellow bar that a popup has been blocked? Try allowing the popup.

The server must still be having problems because I still am unable to sign
in through Windows Mail

Hi there and thanks,

I guess I didn't realize that this newsgroup via WM provides the same
posting and thread service as Vista Community is apparently trying to
pprovide via IE. I thought the Vista Community format was a little more
user friendly but if it doesn't work...???? I think I have tried all
approaches re. Pop ups etc but still no luck....I think I did get in once
while blocking pop ups but can't now. I also don't understand why pop ups
should be a factor in this process of signing in and creating a thread....MS
need to do more work in this area...its frustrating when you have trouble
getting thru to a help process.

Thanks again.

The web view of the newsgroups is much less friendly than using a
newsreader.

In Windows Mail you can:
Automatically highlight all of the messages that you post in color.
Select to only view the messages that you have posted and any replies to
those messages.
Select to hide read messages.
Keep a local copy of all messages.
Delete any message. (local copy)
Save a message to a different folder. (drag and drop)
View the source and properties of a message.
Read and compose messages offline.
Select to download only the messages that you actually want to read.
Subscribe to only the groups that interest you.

There are many more viewing, sorting options.

Is the IE interface more "anonymous"? I thought I saw my e-mail address
displayed on postings via Windows Mail.

You can be more anonymous in Windows Mail. Go to Tools / Accounts. Select
the default news account (msnews.microsoft.com) and click the Properties
Button. On the General Tab, look under User Information. You can enter
whatever name you want to be displayed and enter an email address.

Do Not enter your actual email address. Use anything that is in the format
for an email address, for instance you can use (e-mail address removed) or
anything else in that format.

Then why don't you stop this damn top posting you always do, that ****s up
real newsreaders because everything after your sig line is dropped when
quoting?

Cheers.

Now I'm really confused. I clicked on the suggested website. I got here. I
signed in. MS popped up and asked whether I wanted to participate in a
survey, I was able to create this reply...??????

Hi there,

Have done some more looking around and for whatever reason if I go in via
Conley route which is via Microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups....all seems
to work as I would expect.
However if I try to enter via
windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups things don't work so well or
at all!!!.. Kind of dissapointing that the help route is the troublesome
route????

Thanks again,

Any chance the Microsoft may pick up on this thread?

I would not count on it. I reported the problem via "feedback" at the
broken site long before I found the other site that still worked.
Microsoft's response was that I should take my IE problem up with paid
support or, alternatively, pursue the available self-help, such as posting my
problem on one of their newsgroups.

Interesting . . .

I was having same problem at the site I'd been going to --
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx .
.. . (with the Vista interface):

It would not let me Sign In; kept showing "Sign In" after each sign in, and
would not let me post.

As suggested, went to http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/ . . .
and it worked --- in fact, showed, "Sign Out" -- which meant sign in had
worked but other site could not recognize it.

Thanks for the tip.

Conley,

I got in by going to my Windows Mail, found this post and clicked onto the
http address that you provided. I know- it's a long way around but I haven't
been able to sign in to Vista Community Discussion since last Thursday. I had
no problems last week. I can still sign-in to XP Discussion. Vista- no. Thank
you for your help.

Now here's my rant towards Microsoft:

What the frick is going on? I wrote two emails to Microsoft techs and got a
"we'll refer this problem to our engineers." This is a MICROSOFT WEBSITE! You
are supposed to be trying to convince the world that Vista and Microsoft will
make life easier for us. So, why are you farting around and not fixing this
simple Sign-in problem on your own website? I'm in sales and marketing and I
am appalled that you'd let this situation continue. If this website is under
construction then post a sign. This problem has been going on for almost a
week. No excuses. Get the job done. Un-frickin'-believeable.

End of rant....

That's pretty strange. This is the first I,ve heard of a problem
signing in to the windows community. I just signined in and havn't had
any problems signing in at all. Maybe they're just not letting the
trolls in. :) No, really I am signed in now in another tab and the
sight seems to be running fine. prose072

Here's the confusion. Ten days ago or so I entered Vista Community using
different Microsoft Vista links that led me to this:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx

I was able to sign-in, start new threads, relpy, etc. with no problem at
that website until last week Wednesday.

Today, I used my Windows Mail to get into a Vista discussion group and was
linked to this site:
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...&pt=&catlist=&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

Thanks to Conley's post.

The other site that I originally was linked to by Miscrosoft is having
problems with the sign-in. Others are having the same problem, too. So far, I
have contacted Microsoft tech support and they contacted me and asked for a
full explanation of the problem which I supplied, including PrintScreens.
Thier last reply was that they were going to boot the problem up to their
senior techs. So, there really is a problem on that Vista webpage.

Frank,

Try sign-up here:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx

I can no longer sign-in at this site. I use regular web-based Hotmail, which
the sign-in page says is acceptable. I get to the sign-in page first try.
After I enter my Hotmail address and Hotmail password I'm sent back to Vista
Community but I'm not signed-in. I get no pop-ups. No special messages. My IE
Options look OK. I even did a Restore System to restore to last week when I
was able to sign-in. Nothing.

Any solutions?

Yes, stop using the horrible CDO and use a newsreader. You can
configure Windows Mail as a newsreader but there are better ones
available.
