Sick of Open Office!! Dumped

Helen

I'm sick of spending hours constructing ppt slides only to have that hog
Open Office latch onto them and screw them up! OO is INFERIOR in the ppt
area and I loathe it attaching itself to EVERYTHING! Yeah, I dumped it
after hours of downloading it via dial-up and after unsuccessfully trying
to control it's aggressive latching onto my ppt's. Bye bye OO! I've had
it. OO is garbage with regard to power point slides. It has no option for
sound and when installed, it takes over ppt files and mucks them up. Now
for a reg cleaner to chisel it out and off my computer!

I agree. It is not just in the ppt bit either. I installed it instead of
Office 2000 as I really wanted to try something othe than MS and went back
to office more or less immediately. If you are used to MS Office it is just
not as intuitive and the OO developers need to recognise this. It also needs
something like Outlook as it will not be really useful as an integrated
office suite until that happens.

Sorry to hear you're having problems with it. I just upgraded to version
1.1 and it it now the only thing I use. I routinely convert back and forth
on some fairly complex presentations, and the only problem I have ever
encountered is when someone gives me a PPT with an embedded ActiveX sound
or video object.

FYI, if you're on dial up, several of the freeware sites will let you pick
freeware files into a basket, then spin a CDROM for you and mail it at
minimal cost. For dial up, that could come in handy.

I have DSL now, and had dl'd OO long ago (not the latest version). And it
got so aggravating that just today I dumped it and ;( re-installed
Office2000 (just for PPT - because it is better). But I recall downloading
OO when I had dial-up (over a year ago)...it took three hours then the
danged thing wouldn't install. So I had to try two more times. I finally
got it dl'd and things seemed ok (as long as I didn't do PPT). The I
updated to the newer smooth looking version a few months ago and thought I'd
not have to put Office2000 on this machine! I do not like Office2000! But
after today, and hours wasted, I had to put the loathsome thing back on
here. Oh, well, it was free and good as long as it lasted. But in the ppt
area it's lacking at least for my purposes and this machine. ;( .

Well, that's hardly a fair comparison. Although OOo still has a long
way to go, there is a HUGE difference between the latest version, and
the version you downloaded a year ago. There is also a PIM project
underway, and a database app. as well. I suspect that in another year,
OOo will have moved from being say 75% of M$ Orifice to being around
90%.

Yeah, well what does one do in the mean time (e.g., until OO is comparable
and costly(?)). Yeah as soon as the guinea pigs get the rough edges off,
and the program becomes 'decent', it's 'gimme your money' time. I'm not
criticizing, just stating a fact, for how else can they compete with the

Thanks, but since it's automatic, I can't modify it. I apologize. I just
got the latest update and forgot to UNclick that. I will UNclick the 'sig'

I don't use OO.O, so I'm curious: did you try unassociating the
program from .ppt files? It seems that this would be easy enough to do.

OAN: Personally, I think presentation programs are a solution in
search of a problem. There's nothing that I hate more than sitting
through a long, boring, computer-generated presentation. YMMV.

From the help file:
------<snip>
To change the association of Microsoft Office file name extensions to
open the files either in OpenOffice.org or in Microsoft Office, using
Microsoft Windows:
1. Exit OpenOffice.org and the OpenOffice.org Quickstarter.
2. Run the OpenOffice.org Setup program.
3. In the OpenOffice.org Setup, check the Modify option and click
Next.
4. In the next dialog, click the Modify button.
5. In the next dialog, select or deselect the file types. Click OK and
complete the OpenOffice.org Setup program.

AFAIK the only time the file association option is presented is at the
install phase. At the time it wasn't very clear and iirc I assumed it would
associate txt files as that was my main reason for dl'ing it. I don't
recall whether the option regarding ppt was included. SIDEBAR: Ah, well, I
don't make long drawn out ppt presentations. The longest was 8 slides of
photos for a friend. Perhaps later it will improve and I can get away from
THE GIANT! I like IrfanView because upon initial setup one can associate
files and later change some or all. IIRC that option wasn't existent in OO,
or if so, I wasn't able to locate it.

As it is an pen source project, it will NOT be "give me your money time".
Sun uses the Open Office as the foundation for their StarOffice
suite...which you can pay for...but it includes a closed source database.

I would love to know WHAT you are doing in power point that Impress does
not handle. Do you ise a lot of ActiveX functions? I have to use MSOffice
2000 at work (I am in the military...they decide what we use), but do work
on the MANY PowerPoint presentations at home....using OpenOffice. Not had
any problems so far with it. And the fact the patest version of OO allows
me to print to PDF is very useful for me.

Yeah as soon as the guinea pigs get the rough edges off, and the
program becomes 'decent', it's 'gimme your money' time.

OO was created specifically to be a free alternative to StarOffice.
It'll never be 'gimme your money' time.

If you're not happy with OO, maybe StarOffice will do what you need?
I'm not criticizing, just stating a fact, for how else can they
compete with the giants? Did you read this?
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html

By associating with other giants. OpenOffice development is partly
funded by some very big corporations who are fed up with MS's
extortionate business tactics and want an MS-Office alternative for
their office desktops.

While some diligence is called for, I don't lay awake nights worrying
about TCPA and Palladium. Linux isn't chained to the Intel platform the
way Windows is. I could buy a $1,000 Blade from Sun right now, slap
Linux and all my usual applications on it, and never know the
difference.

Those of you looking for a Microsoft alternative should consider Corel's
WordPerfect suite, or IBM's Lotus SmartSuite. Everybit as good and
cheaper - not free- I'll grant you. BUT they are tested quality products.
with real, WORKING database engines and PIMS. You can buy legal various
older versions of them at softwareoutlet.com REAL cheap. Even older
versions of WP Suite are better than the latest version of OO.

I couldn't deal with OO either and had to delete it. If all you need is a
wordprocessor for term papers, or a spreadsheet for keeping a home budget,
it (OO) would be OK I think (albeit, a tad sluggish compared to other
products like Microsoft Works.) BUT you can't run an office with it and you
sure as hell couldn't run a business with it.

I think at this point, OO is really only a good choice for those whose anger
at Microsoft outweighs their need to select good business tools.

Don't have any need for an office suite myself, but I know that a lot of
businesses are now using OO and many of my friends happily use it. I
imagine it depends on whether your needs mesh with the parts that have
been completed so far.

I do agree that an office suite is overkill if you just want to write
school papers. For something like that I'd prefer a simple text editor
and Latex. If I were a WYSIWYG fan I'd probably go with KOffice.
However, I doubt that there's a version of that for you Windows users.

I haven't checked out AbiWord in a couple of years, but according to its
fans it's supposed to be pretty good now. AbiWord is a free word
processor that aims to be similar to MS Word. It runs under both Windows
and Linux. The URL is <http://www.abisource.com/>.
