shutting down error

I'm not sure if this started with Windef or One Live, but, everytime I turn
off my computer, even if there have been no windows open for quite a while, I
get this message......
MMDIAG.EXE
"The application failed to initialize because the windows station is
shutting down"

And occasionally I get that message........."end task" the program is not
responding, or closing, and it tells you to close and risk losing ......

Any help?????

Thanks a lot!
Village Idiot (you knew I'd be back!!)

Welcome back V I...

MMdiag.exe is a logging and tracing manager (according to Defender) that
belongs to the MusicMatch Jukebox. MusicMatch Jukebox is a multimedia
application supporting most know media formats, and was probably added to
your startup programs by your hardware manufacturer (gotta Dell?). Anyway,
there is no need to have this in startup, it can be brought up anytime you
wish to run it, and it's certainly not critical to your OS on an ongoing
basis, so I'd just remove it from starting on windows startup, since it's
probably trying to run as a background process for you and wasting memory.

Try opening MusicMatch, it may not setup correctly in your OneCare firewall
or internally, since it goes to the net to be able to download music
tracks. That might give you a clue as to why it's not initializing
fully/correctly.

Hi Dave M.................everyone get ready to laugh at poor ole village
idiot..........
how do I find what is in "startup", and how do I remove something from
startup, when I do find it????? When ya finish laughing, maybe you can give
me some info. OH..........and yes dude, I gotta Dell. When I go to start
and go to all programs and startup, all it shows is "Adobe Reader Speed
Launch" and "Windows Desktop Search". When I right click on my taskbar, it
shows quick launch and start up. Music Match is not under the start up tab.
There is a shortcut on my desktop for music match.

Thanks a lot guys!
Village Idiot............still trying to drink that bear! hehe

Go to Start>run> then type "msconfig" (without quotation marks)>click OK>then
click the start up tab (don't touch anything else) and uncheck music match if
it's there. But I really think it would help to install the User Profile Hive
Cleanup tool. That will help solve the cause of the problem.

Agreed Reb...

I'd do both of these recommendations, get rid of the autostart since you
don't want the Jukebox 24/7, and add the cleanup tool for MusicMatch as
well as any other programs that run into the same problem now or in the
future. Thanks for that idea for the Village People.

There are so many places that a program can startup within Windows it can
be daunting to find the specific one... and the spyware guys take advantage
of that for their covert installations. MsConfig will do it for him
though.

Hi Old Rebel and Dave,

Thanks thanks thanks for the help!!! Last night I downloaded the thing you
suggested, Dave. Not sure it helped anything. Last night when I turned off
my computer, I got the end task box for IE !!!!!!!!!! aaarrrrgggghhhhhh
(Yep, I close all windows before I shut down)

Just changed the msconfig.......thanks very much. And...........good
grief...... there are about 27 things listed in start up. I assume this is
why my computer takes so long to uhhhh.......boot up....?

Now.......when I had to restart after changing the msconfig......before the
computer would shut down, I got the end program box for
"ShellIconHiddenWindow".......not responding......etc. What the *&#@* is
that? Is there maybe something on my computer that is causing these windows
to close or shut down or end too slowly?

And if y'all can put up with this village idiot a little longer, I'd like to
find out which of the other items in start up I can uncheck...........

these are all under program files.........exe extension...
(dude, I gotta dell) PCMService ...dell media experience
sgtray......common files\sonic\updatemanager (Is this vokume control on
taskbar?)
IntelMEM ...intel - modem event moniter
realschd.....common files\real\update_OB\realsched
jusched....java\jre1.5.0_06\bin jusched (I think I may need this one)
DSAgnt ....(dude I gotta dell) dell support\dsagent
qttask ...quicktime
adobereader......... adobe\acroba_2 reader
apdproxy.adobephotoshopalbumstarter
MIMboot.........musicmatch (taken care of thanks to you guys!)
ituneshelper........itunes helper

sheesh..............where did all this crap come from????? The only music
program I use on my computer is windows media player. I have some music on
it that I play sometimes, but I keep getting a message saying wmp has
encountered an error and needs to shut down. Maybe there is a conflict with
these other music programs that I do NOT use...??? Can I delete any of these
programs............the music ones I mean, that I don't use....????

Oh yeah..........Dave...the village "people" won't let me be a member of the
"people", cause I'm an idiot. That's why I have to bother y'all. hehe

I found this program mentioned on Donna's Security site...
http://msmvps.com/blogs/donna/default.aspx
kinda like it, and you might also. It will tell you what all these unknown
things are, although I don't let it run at startup (everybody wants a
piece of the pie,) so I made a desktop icon and only start it when I want.
It plugs right into task manager.

Yeap, you have a lot of not needed programs starting, and yeah they were
installed "for" you by Dell, probably after a little cash changed hands.
So enjoy what Michael Dell thinks you need constantly or...

I'll answer between the lines, of course my opinions are gonna be
unbiased... ha-ha

Apparently MusicMatch again... oh brother. Follow this thread and links...

sgtray......common files\sonic\updatemanager (Is this vokume control on

I believe it's part of an ordered Sonic CD/DVD burning product, a check for
updates. I think I got one (DLA upgrade) in a year and a half but leave it
in to be safe or you could check manually once a year... ;)
IntelMEM ...intel - modem event moniter

If your not on a dial up Intel modem no need for it, if you are on an Intel
Modem keep it.
realschd.....common files\real\update_OB\realsched

real player updates, since you only use Media Player... adios
jusched....java\jre1.5.0_06\bin jusched (I think I may need this one)

yeap keep him... notification of Java updates maybe, security exploits
affect old java regularly. More reliable Java update notifications occur
in this newsgroup, however.
DSAgnt ....(dude I gotta dell) dell support\dsagent

might want to hear from Dell once in a while about upgrades/security...
keep
qttask ...quicktime

yuck... They should make it illegal for Steve Jobs to write Windows code,
remove from startup... often causes conflicts, system removal on the other
hand can be problematic. I learned my lesson the hard way, and would
rather not see quicktime videos than have this around, or worse yet have to
upgrade it.
adobereader......... adobe\acroba_2 reader

Not needed in startup, unless you spend all your time reading pdf files...
right!!
apdproxy.adobephotoshopalbumstarter

Not needed in startup
MIMboot.........musicmatch (taken care of thanks to you guys!)
ituneshelper........itunes helper

bet you don't have an interest in iTune/iPod downloads from MacApple either
sheesh..............

I would try and keep UPH Clean running. I have been on many an issue where
the profile is not unloading successfully and it takes 30 mins to reboot a
machine :) Thankfully we were able to get the dev team to give us a tool
that looks for this condition and unloads the profile successfully. You may
not need it 99% of the time, but when you start to run into this condition
you would want it :)
