Shutdown Stuck at Logging Off

I have Win XPSP2 Home. Whenever I try to do a shutdown or a restart,
everthing seems to proceed normally until I get to the Loggin Off screen.
There it gets stuck. I have waited as long as 15 minutes, but nothing ever
happens. I have to power off and on. This lack of a proper shutdown/restart
is causing problems with my McAffee firewall.

I did some more experimenting. This problem only occurs when I do a restart.
If I do a shutdown, logoff works. If I log off prior to doing a restart,
the restart works. So I guess I have a workaround.

Might try User Profile Hive Cleanup Service http://tinyurl.com/2h3yl
"A service to help with slow log off and unreconciled profile
problems."

Contrary to the statement I made earler, I have not be able to consistently
do a successful shutdown or log off and then do a restart. Using these two
approaches works sometimes but not very often.

I also installed the Profile Hive Cleanup Service, but that didn't improve
the situation.

Totally irrelevant. Most of the article was about false restarts and a few
issues about shutting down. As I said in the first post, the problem is that
Windows gets stuck at logoff.

I didn't say it would fix your problem - I am not at your computer and can't
see it, I just said take a look at it. Sorry for trying to help. Good
luck.

Hi,

I had a similar problem. My problem was simply that i could not do a
restart. It would simply not come back on. While investigating the
problem, I learned (if I remember correctly) that the failure to shut
down could have something to do with a faulty SP 2 installation.

That wasn't my problem though; i could shut down fine. Just couldn't
restart. As it turned out, once i replaced my ATI video graphics card
with a NVIDIA, the problem no longer occurred.

So, it could be some sort of driver problem, or hardware conflict.

Hope this helps...
