Shutdown problem similar to previous post: "instruction at 0x10002

I have been searching for a problem similar to one I am experiencing with my
three-month old IBM ThinkPad T42 with Windows XP. This thread posted last
October is very similar to the error message I receive on shutdown, however
this person reformatted their harddrive and the problem went away. I have no
interest in doing this, and don't feel I should need to on an almost brand
new computer. Here is the link to the previous post(s):

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...-us-ms-winxp&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1

I, too, receive the error message with "The instruction at "0x10002669"
Referenced Memory at "0x10002669". The memory could not be read." However,
sometimes the 0x..... number is different and the message does not come up on
every shutdown, more like every other shutdown. I do not now what program it
is referencing, but will try to get this down the next time I receive the
message (it often goes away before I have time to fully record it). I also
have the experience where it does not matter if you press 'OK' or just leave
it. The computer shuts down anyway and appears to have no problem on start-up.

All other aspects of my computer seem to be running normally. I may have
noticed a bit of a slowdown in computer speed recently, but this could be my
imagination/frustration at having problems so early in the computer's life.
The only new software I have recently installed is Norton Internet Security
2007. I have done a registry scan and have 10 errors that Microsoft's free
Live OneCare could not resolve. I could redo this scan and try to give the
registry errors if anyone feels this would be helpful information.

I am not very tech savvy, so any help and assistance in trying to get to the
bottom of this would be greatly greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You are still in a position to backup your data. Do not pass up the
opportunity. Thinkpads are not equiped to do the kind of repair setup you
need. It only offers a restore to 'Factory defaults' and justifies this with
a caution to backup often.

Thanks, and yes, I do back up regularly. Is restoring to factory defaults
really my only option? I find this incredibly difficult (not to mention
frustrating) to believe.
