shut down problem

Just did a clean install of WinXPhomeSP2 - everything is fine except that
the computer won't shut down - the "Windows is closing" screen appears -
there is a clicking sound from the computer - then, immediately, the old "It
is now safe to shut down your computer" message appears.

However the fans keep running, the HDD light stays on, the on-off button
doesn't work, nor does the "re-set" button.

The only (awkward) solution is to physically disconnect the computer from
the wall plug.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked the ACPI/APM settings in the BIOS and (in some cases)
in the Power section under screen savers?

You may have the Power Button on your case/Processor stuck and causing
standby mode.
When you done clean install did you unplug all the extra pits and pieces and
start just with the mouse and keybrd, that if the installation on PC not a
laptop.

Try to log on Safe Mode and look for any Error Messages in the Event Viewer
and post them here if any.
