Shut Down & My Docs

A

antioch

I run WinXP SP2 in Classic Mode.
I have recently noticed that the My Docs in the Start Menu still contains
items that were there before shutting down the computer.
I am certain that this cleared everytime I turned off the computer - or have
I been dreaming.
I have looked for a similar prob in this group over the past couple of
months but found nothing.
And I have looked on the computer settings for an answer.
Help and Support came up with nothing either.

Antioch.

The docs in the start menu are recent docs. You can disable the list, clean
on shutdown or control the maximum amout of my docs held

This is how to control them using the registry:

START | RUN | Type 'regedit' (without quotes) & press ENTER. This opens the
Registry Editor

Number of Recent Docs:

Navigate to:

Current User:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r

All USers:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explor
er

Key Name: MaxRecentDocs
Key Type: DWORD
Value: (15 Default (change for the number of recent docs to be listed))

Note: The EXPLORER key may not exist & will have to be created by
right-clicking the POLICIES key | NEW | KEY

-------------------------------------

Clear Recent Docs on Shutdown:

Current User:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r

All USers:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explor
er

Key Name: ClearRecentDocsOnExit
Key Type: DWORD
Value: 0 = disable, 1 = enable <---- you want this to 1 (clean on shutdown)

Hi NC
Many thanks for your suggestion, but I am not happy playing in registry as I
have no clue what I am doing.
That is why I do not use registry cleaners - I would rather take my chances
crossing a busy road blindfolded :)
I have no doubt your solution will work, but it does seem like using a 10lb
hammer to open a peanut.
As yet I do not know you well enough to let you hold my hand either.
I have checked as per advice from Kelly, who can hold my hand any time, and
I will walk through fire, and the box she has suggested is not ticked.
I have saved your suggestion, just in case.

Hi Kelly
Many thanks - I must be blind - I knew there was something to check/uncheck
and completely missed it.
There I was going up and down the start menu items :-(
The box was unchecked, so checked it, unchecked it, stuffed the folder with
files, turned off the comp, restarted and My Docs was empty???????????
I know that proves nothing - should have turned off first with extra stuff
in it. I wonder what caused this? I have added nothing to my system in the
last two weeks - except the last Black Tuesday updates. The next lot are
upon us :-(
I will keep an eye on this for a while - the prob might return.
