Should I purchase Win XP?

S

sheana

Very soon, Windows XP is no longer going to be available for sale. The 2
computers I use at home are a Dell and an HP Media Center desktop. They come
with hardware specific installation disks that aren't "pure" Operating System
disks.

I like Win XP, and I've heard horror stories about Vista. Is there any
reason I should purchase a copy of Win XP Pro?

Thanks in advance.

I think you answered your own question when you say "I like Win XP, and I've
heard horror stories about Vista."

Windows XP isn't going anywhere soon. Microsoft will discontinue support for
XP Home but will continue supporting XP Pro until the year 2014. Vista is
the current flavour of the day and is becoming more stable as service packs
are released. It too will be replaced within the next few years by the next
incarnation. Remember that if you choose to upgrade to Vista ensure there
are Vista drivers available for all the hardware and that the software you
have is Vista compatible. You should also ensure you upgrade your RAM to at
least 2GB to make certain Vista will run smoothly.

Support for XP Home will be the same as for Pro.

Horror stories abound with every version of Windows, especially when
it's still relatively new. But you always hear many more frustrated
people with problems, looking for help, than reports from the many
satisfied users of the product. Especially if you hear the horror
stories on the newsgroups, people come to the newsgroups *because*
they have problems and are looking for solutions (and most of the time
they get solutions). A group like this is far from representative of
the world at large.

Most Vista problems, by far, that people report here have nothing to
do with defects in the software. They result from people's ignorance,
from bad or inadequate hardware, from old drivers, from viruses, from
spyware, and so on. And except for very rare situations, they always
get a fix for their problems, and in most cases, that fix is a very
simple one to implement.

As someone else once said, hang around a transmission shop for a
while, and you'll think that all cars have transmission problems.

I like Windows XP too, but I like Vista even better. I've had it
installed here since RTM in November of 2006, and I've had no problems
at all with it. I see no reason to avoid it, when you're ready to get
a new computer.

Is there any
reason I should purchase a copy of Win XP Pro?

I don't see any reason to.

If you can reload the system and maybe all you have to do is replace the
HD some day, you can keep that old PC running for a long time.
And when that PC go you'll probably want a better machine and that
better machine hardware may not run XP, lack of drivers, so you'll be
forced to Vista.

But only you know how much weight you put on your hatred for Vista and
love for XP. We can only speculate.

I will adopt Vista but only when I have to. For now this old XP is
working.

That's a question for YOU to answer! Not the biased opinions of people
who have had problems with Vista.

Wellll, I'd agree with you except for those who own AMD, HP, an XP Gold,
& who knows, plus, the loss of update abilities, etc. seems to be
reality, and a few other things. Else MS wouldn't be releasing the KB's
they are. In the past, complaints weren't easily reproducible; some of
the Vista stuff is. I expect SP's to take care of it so IMO it's a "not
yet" decision, probably.

I thought at one time waiting to see what windows 7 was about, but from
the sound of it, it's only vista rehashed and built upon. My Linux
playtoys look better and better all the time but ... that has its own
set of horror stories. My biggest complaints about MS right now are
planned/forced obsolesence and completely out of line pricing even for
upgrades.
