Sharing Vista Folders

I attempted to share the "Documents" folder on my new Vista machine but am
apparently doing something wrong. When I check the folders shared, it's
listed. But when I check "My Network Places" on the Windows XP" machine on
my LAN, all I see is "Users on Xps435mt" (the name of the computer is
"Xps435mt"). I've created a target folder under "Documents" into which I
want to place a backup copy of a Quicken file that's on the XP machine. Can
anyone give me a clue as to what I've done wrong?

I don't think you've done anything wrong. You've run into what I
consider a bug in Windows Vista. This should fix it:

First, un-share the Users folder:

1. Open the C: disk.
2. Right-click the Users folder.
3. Click Properties (not Share).
4. Click Sharing.
5. Click Advanced Sharing.
6. Un-check "Share this folder".
7. Click OK.
8. Click Close.

Then, share the desired desktop folder:

9. Right-click the folder.
10. Click Properties (not Share).
11. Click Sharing.
12. Click Advanced Sharing.
13. Check "Share this folder".
14. Click OK.
15. Click Close.

Although the "Users" folder still shows on the XP's "Network" list, so does
the folder I want. Perhaps the "Users" folder will disappear when I reboot.
I got the desired folder I want though. Thanks, Steve.

P.S. I bought the Vista machine in late March but it wasn't functional until
May (Vista problems after changing the hard drive twice with the 2nd one
loaded with a new Vista operating system). I called Dell yesterday to ask
for special consideration to slip under their June purchase requirement to
receive Windows 7. I might as well have used the time trying to figure out
the network issue you solved for me.

Would you happen to have any suggestion for in getting Windows 7 from Dell?
I planned on writing the executive offices to by-pass Bombay. As an
alternative, would you happen to know if I can get an upgrade from MS at a
reasonable price? I have Vista Ultimate.

You're welcome. I"I'm glad that my suggestion worked for you and let
you share the desired folder.

I'm sorry, but I don't have any suggestions for dealing with Dell or
buying a Windows 7 upgrade.

I spoke too soon, Steve. Though the folder is showing up on the XP machine,
the path to the folder on the Vista machine is not correct; my attempts to
place a backup copy of Quicken from XP to Vista meets with a message it
can't find the file. Here's what I've got:

I followed your instructions to share a folder called "Quicken Data Files".
That showed up on my XP machine as "Quicken Data Files on Xps435mt". But the
path (target) to that folder when I right click on that listing and select
"Properties" is \\XPS435MT\Quicken Data Files. That won't get me there,
apparently.

I'm very green to Vista and don't use the machine much so I'm really
ignorant of the sharing options. I've read them but probably don't
appreciate all the nuances of them yet and well may have something wrong.
Here's what I know about the settings:

When I look at the Sharing Center, I find these settings:

Network discovery Custom
File Sharing On
Public Folder Sharing Off
Printer Sharing On
Password protected sharing Off
Media Sharing Off

When I click on the sentence that lets me see what files I'm sharing I get
these items in the folders named to the right:

Adobe Reader 9 Installer Desktop (C:\Users\Jgreg)
Quicken Data File Documents (C:\Users\Jgreg)
Documents Jgreg (C:\Users)

(How Adobe ever got there is beside me. I don't think it belongs there, does
it?)

When attempted to unshare the "Quicken Data Folder", I got this message:

Some items are still shared:
Quicken Data Folder
C:\Users\Jgreg\Documents\Quicken Data Folder
This folder is in a shared folder.

That last statement caused me to think I'm over my head. Can you point me in
the right direction please.
