Sharing folder problem on network

G

Guest

Hi, I have 3 computers all connected to the same router:

PC - XP Home - Ethernet

Laptop A - XP Profesional - Wireless

Laptop B - XP Professional - Wireless

All computers are in the same workgroup and can all be seen in the workgroup
on each computer. The PC can access Laptop A and B to get into 'shared
folder, shared music' etc but the Laptop's can't access the PC's shared
folder. When i attempt to access the PC's shared folder i get an error on the
lines of 'you might not have permission to use this network resource' yet
file and printer sharing has been enabled on all computers. Somehow i have a
folder on my desktop of laptop A which can access the shared folder of the
PC. Laptop B cannot access it atall. Both laptop's though can't access the PC
through the workgroup. i hope this all make sense can anyone please help. I'm
aiming for Laptop B to access the PC's shared folder

Thomas,

File sharing in Windows XP is a lot of fun, especially with wireless computers,
and XP Home / Pro mixed. Please start by reading this article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html>

Also, if you wish, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from all 3
computers, and we'll diagnose any network problems. Read this article for
instructions:

Right, i have information from all 3 computers, here they are, i hope it helps:

<SNIP>

Thomas,

OK, the physical and logical aspects look OK.
# All 3 computers have connectivity (getting DHCP OK).
# All 3 computer in 192.168.0/24 subnet.
# All 3 computers have address resolution (Broadcast / Unknown OK).

What is the path to the shared folder on the PC (is that HOMEPC)? Is it an
accessible share with Simple File Sharing / Guest authentication?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Guest>

Next, let's look for a browser conflict. Use "browstat status" to diagnose
that, and post output from all 3 computers here.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp>

Finally, diagnose the relationships between each computer. Take the following
code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify computer names and ip
addresses).

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight
then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V)
into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Thomas,

I repeated my previous message with more detail. Please reply to that message
with specific questions about which items you're unclear on. And provide
responses to my questions where possible.

When you reply, PLEASE type your reply BELOW my post to which you reply. When
you post above (aka top posting) AND you have the "--" above your signature, my
newsreader truncates everything below the "--". This makes it impossible for me
to refer to the contents of my previous post, which will make it pretty hard for
us to work on your problem effectively. Read this article for details:

firstly, yes that is HOMEPC but i dont know whether it is an accessible
share with simple file sharing / guest authentication. How can i find out and
make it accessible?

also what is 'guest authentication'. each of my computers are all
administrators and there is only 1 user on each computer if that helps with
the guest authentication query

Thomas,

HomePC is running XP Home, right? OK, it's using Simple File Sharing and Guest
authentication. PLEASE read these articles, and follow links as appropriate:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Guest>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Simple>

Reading the entire article would not be a bad idea:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html>

What is the complete path to the shared folder that you can't access?

Please read articles. I will be very grateful too (and so will you). All of
your questions should be answered.

Moving onto the 'browstat' process. I typed excactly "browstat status
c:\browstat.txt" (with no ") into the 'cmd' windows but had an error saying
' 'browstat' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable
program or batch file'

Did you download browstat, per the instructions? If so, what folder did you
copy it into?

Thomas,

If you put it in "C:\Utility", AND you added ";C:\Utility" to the Path variable,
then it should run as "browstat status". If you only put it in "C:\Utility",
and did NOT make any Path change, you will have to run it as
"c:\utility\browstat status".

Right i have performed browstat on all 3 computer and here is the information:

<SNIP>

This does help. You have to eliminate the impossibilities, to concentrate on
the possibilities.
# There is no browser conflict.
# There are no unnecessary protocols.
# There is the predicted "error = 5" on HomePC.

Now let's try again. What is the complete name of the folder that can't be
accessed? You said originally:
"When i attempt to access the PC's shared folder i get an error on the lines of
'you might not have permission to use this network resource'"
HomePC is running XP Home, which means that it uses Guest authentication. Guest
authentication is limited in capability.

both laptops can access the workgroup. all 3 computers appear in the

(HOMEPC) thats when the 'it is not accessible' error appears. but, i have a
folder on Laptop A's desktop that is named 'shared files' and it is the PC's
shared folder. so how can Laptop A access this if it cant get into the PC
from the workgroup?. basically i want to find out how to do the same with

The complete name of the folder where you put browstat is "C:\Utility". What is
the complete name of the 'shared files'? READ:

Thomas,

As I state in my article (link provided several times), sharing a folder in
"C:\Documents and Settings" on an XP Home (Guest authentication) system is not a
good solution. In your case you should either:
# Disable Simple File Sharing, then check Everyone / Guest access for your
shared folder.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/advanced-file-sharing-tweaks-in.html#DisableSFS>
OR
# Setup another folder for sharing, NOT in "C:\Documents and Settings".

G

sharing a folder thats not in C:\Documents and Settings does not work. i
tried rebooting into 'safe mode with networking' and failed to disable
'simple file sahring'. i have read the tutorials but can not seem to get my
head around them. sorry that i've been hard to work with. please could you
guide me from safe mode with networking to disable simple file sharing.
