Sharing an ADSL internet connection

K

what I am going to describe here has been done succsessfully twice on two
other systems but this time I cannot do it with this perticular computer.

I have a ADSL ethernet modem that connects to the computer via a NIC card. I
install a second NIC card in order for the computer to have lan connectivity
and share the internet connection via the WIN XP ICS. The second card gets
an ip address of 192.168.0.1 with mask 255.255.255.0. The first nic card
that is connected with the ADSL modem gets its IP adress automatically.

Now. I can connect to the internet and the connection is being shared too,
but at a tremendusly SLOW rate!
For example MSN messenger can connect from the ICS client machine, but when
I try to open a web page it takes too long say 20 mins for one single page!
The speed on the computer the modem is connected to is normal (384 KBPS).

Does anybody know what can be causeing this decrease of bandwidth??? Any
solutions out there??

Thanks

I saw somware something about adjusting the MTU, can this be the solution,
how can I do this?

That might help, but a sure solution is to not use two nic cards and just
get a router to share the connection.
Goto - www.pcpitstop.com - do a internet speed test, then use the speed
autofix(bottom of page) to adjust your mtu values.

Hi;
Go the "simpler" router route instead.
You're just complicating your life with that setup.

I dont want a router! I want to do it like I have described.
If you dont have any advice on that subject then fine. but a router is out
of the question.

A simple router is the cheapest and simplest way to share a
connection, including cables it should be under $75 and
you'll be able to use either computer individually or at
same time. If you want, you can add more computers to your
network, something you cannot do with a direct cable
sharing. Also, if your computer that is the point of
Internet connection is inoperative (for any reason) you
won't be able to connect with the other computer without a
considerable amount of tweaking.

This KB article describes the XP TCP/IP configuration parameters, one of which is MTU size.

Why is a router out of the question? It is the best way to share
connections.
But in case you missed it, I did post a site that will help you tweak your
mtu automatically.

thanks the annoyances page I think describes the problem. I will try it. But
My question is why does it happen on one computer and not on another, the
modems and nic cards and os are the same type.....
