Sharing a dialup connection to the internet...how?

Fran

I have a windows 2000 server with active directory. We lost our T1 for
a while and I need to get a 56k modem connection shared with 3 client
computers through a modem (I know it's slow but it will at least work
for some of the stuff we need...it's our only alternative for the next
few weeks.)

So...what I need to know is how can I share the dialup network
connection I have created on the server (through an external telephone
modem) with the client computers?

look up 'internet connection sharing' in the windows help, that should give
you what you need. at least i hope so, i haven't actually tried that on
2000 server, but it works fine on 2000 pro. one thing you want to watch is
to be sure you have a firewall on the server's dialup connection, you may
have been protected by a router firewall and/or nat before, but when you
dialup the server direct to the internet it is wide open.

Hello Fran,

In a Windows 2000 domain environment the internet connection sharing will
disabled on the DC and member server.

Well if you have the server in a workgroup environment we can configure
ICS.

Here is the article that would help configure ICS

237254 How to Enable Internet Connection Sharing on a Network Connection in

I tried the ICS checkbox and it ran...but it changed the IP address of
the server and disabled all the client accesses...not what I wanted.
It also effectively disabled the printer servers (which are on static
IP addresses) making it impossible to print off the internet
connection (and this is one of the primary reasons I needed internet
connectivity in the first place...the ability to print off
internet-accessed documents.)

I can get the dialup to work at the server level but I need to let the
clients access the internet through this only connection. Is there
away to do this WITHOUT losing my internal LAN IP scheme?

(I have a new T1 on order but it's 3 weeks out and I can't leave them
down for 3 weeks!)

Thanks,

-Fran-
