Shared Network Printer Cannot be Seen. - Please Help!

I appear to have the same problem as many. I have a destop which is
wirelessly connected to a router/modem and a laptop which is also wirelessly
connected to the router modem. My printer is hardwired to the desktop via a
USB port. I want to network the printer so that i can print from the laptop
wirelessly.

I have done this previously with another network, other computeres but the
same printer. The problem happens on the 'Add Printer Wizard' when I browse
for printers; other printers in the network are shown but no printers on the
computer i want.

I have shared the printer in question (Canon i865) but it does not appear on
any computer. I have made sure that IP address do not conflict. I can ping
the laptop & default gateway from the destop but from the laptop i can ping
the default gateway but NOT the destop. It seems that no computer can make
any contact to the destop over the network (I am sure that the desktop is
acctually on the network!)

I have made some attempt to make the firewall on the desktop allow the
laptop but this still may be the cause of the problem.

Any help would be much appreciated, many thanks,

P Morgan

The firewall on the machine sharing the printer is the most likely cause of
this issue.

You might try turning that off completely just to test whether this is the
case.

Information about how to correctly configure a firewall is specific to that
brand and version of firewall--so you are best off posting in a forum
related to that firewall software, or at least describing that information
in your post so that others who use that software can help.

Thank you Bill for your speedy response.

I have tried turning off the firewall (Norton Internet Security) but this
does not work. In the 'Add Printer Wizard' when I try to browse for printers
and double click on the network name to expand it and find the avilable
terminals, there is a long pause with the hourglass and then nothing happens.

Please ask for any other information if needed.

Many thanks,

You might try adding the printer manually without browsing for the name.

It is easiest to do this if both the computer name and the printer share
name are simple--you just specify that you wish to install a shared network
printer with the name \\computername\sharename

I'm not sure how to advise you about turning off NIS completely, and I
definitely don't know how to enable file and printer sharing through it. It
may matter which version of NIS as well--usually this is by year?
