How can I move the Shared Documents folder to a different (i. e.,
user-defined) location?

Andreas,

Use TweakUI > 'My Computer' > 'Special Folders' to redirect special folders.

TweakUI v2.00 for Windows XP/XP MCE [564 KB].
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

TweakUI v2.10 for Windows XP SP1/XP MCE/2003 [147 KB].
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

To do it manually, read here: Shell Folders Move:

I tried tweakUI on MCE and it did not wor

I tried the registry at kellys korner and it did not work

The only thing I have been able to do which worked is this
1. Create a folder ("L:\Shared Documents") you want to have "Shared Documents" point to

2. Rename "Shared Documents" in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users to the name you want to appear in "My Computer" and "Other Places" It must be the same name as the Folder you created in Step 1

3 Open regedi

4 Go to : My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folder

5 Edit the value of "Common Documents" to the path of the folder you created in Step

6 Go to : My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folder

7 Edit the value of "Common Documents" to the path of the folder you created in Step

8 YOU MUST REBOOT IMMEDIATELY AFTER CLOSING REGEDIT FOR SETTINGS TO TAKE EFFECT

Thanks for checking. Quite a few people have been asking about this without a solution. Shared documents is where the big files go (videos, music, pictures). For restore and defragmentation purposes I, like many others, want to seperate these from the OS partition usually onto another drive but we want to keep the My Documents/Shared Documents, My Music/Shared Music links working in the task pane

Thanks I really appreciate it.
