Word 2000 document in a network folder. One group of users has read-only permission to the folder while another smaller group has modify permission.
If a modify user opens the file he/she can edit it and save changes. If a read-only user opens the file it is a read-only copy and he/she cannot save changes. However, if a read-only user opens the file first then when a modify user opens the file his/her copy is read-only and changes cannot be saved. Apparently Word is placing some kind of lock on the file even though the read-only user does not have permission to change it.
I tried setting a modify password on the document itself and that seems to resolve the problem, however, this work-around means that everyone in the modify group needs to know the password and enter it every time they open the document. Does anyone know of a true fix for this problem???
