"Shared by Me" search not working in Explorer

David

I posted this question a couple weeks ago and got no adequate response,
so I'll try again in hopes someone knows the fix.

I have 2 Vista machines and neither one shows any results when I click
on the search feature "Shared by Me", even though both machines have
many shareable files/folders.

I tried calling MS, but lucky me got Vista with an OEM serial number on
a new machine so i was referred to Toshiba. Toshiba support knows
nothing about this issue.

The other searches such as "recent documents", etc all work fine.

The only things I can think of are:

1) Is indexing turned off?

2) Did the user account with which you logged on do any sharing, or was it
done under another account?

3) The computer doesn't share anything.

1. NO

2. ??

3. Oh, yes it is!!! files are accessible on the network.

I guess my question #2 was a little cryptic. Let's say that you have two
user accounts on your machine, Bob and David. If Bob shares a folder and
David does not, but David does a search for "Shared by Me", the search will
return nothing.

How are you accessing the "Shared by Me" search? Directly from an Explorer
window? Try accessing it from the link in the Network and Sharing center.

I can't recall all the specifics of an earlier mvp or msft person post in this or another vista forum..but iirc the xml code for 'shared by me' only searches in two locations(public and users).

If I find that post, I'll post the contents.

From either explorer or the networking center, the result is no files
are listed in the search. Only one user on the Vista machine. Another
vista machine, with one user, also does not show any files as being
shared in the "shared by me" search, enough though they are shared. I
can share any folders successfully, on either machine. The only fault
lies in the feature, "Shared by Me" search.

those folders are shared. files are inside of those folders. those
folders and files are seen from other machines on the network, so there
is NO issue with sharing. The only issue i have is that blasted "shared
by me" search funtion. The "shared by me" search returns zero results.

I'm thinking that not many people understand what the issue is. I've
posted this to 2 MS forums several times and no one has found either a
solution OR even verified that the search function returns results on
their vista machines. Perhaps my explanation of the issue is not clear??

I see what you mean. And I agree -- Shared By Me doesn't appear to be
useful.

Manually create new folder(s) in either of those locations or manually share an existing(e.g. Pictures), add a file, share them, adjust permission so that it includes another user(i.e. you may need another user account on the same machine)...set sharing/permission with everyone set to contributor, co-owner,owner right or guest with read or greater rights. Then let the index be rebuilt(it may take a while).

------
From a post by Keith Miller, mvp in vista.general.
The 'Shared by Me Search' function's XML code uses two queries on 'known
folders' . The scope points to these as the known folders/directories:
{5E6C858F-0E22-4760-9AFE-EA3317B67173}
- User Profile
{DFDF76A2-C82A-4D63-906A-5644AC457385}
- Public
-------
From a post by Joe Guidera in this forum
The "shared by me" search is a custom saved search that I believe (don't
hold me to this) actually uses the registry and a virtual folder/file store
to enumerate your shared items (read vista voodoo). The second option is a
good old fashioned - show me what the browse master knows and relies on SMB,
Netbios, WINS, etc (a whole host of rules that determines what's broadcast
and who keeps a list of what) on your network. The former should be a saved search: C:\Users\<username>\Searches\Shared By Me.search-ms
