So do you really think that a guy making $65,000,000,000/year gives a rip
what you think?

I am so not a ms tech person. I totally agree with cp. You rip on cp and
make fun because u dont have the same greif we non-techies develop searching
for answers to problems that ms should have already fixed. If you are not 6
year old children then show it.
Shame on people who rip on others for being frustrated!!

Sigh... perhaps you did not read the part of Microsoft's website that says
installation problems are not charged for... unless of course it's an OEM
version of Vista, in which case it's the PC manufacturer's responsibility to
support it.

Since you don't even tell us any details of your 'network printing problem'
how are we supposed to solve it?

C

Cari \(MS-MVP\)

What is the printing and imaging problem you are searching for the answers
for.... ? We cannot help if you do not tell us what your problem is.

If you detail it out here, we will try to help. We would encourage you to
use good grammar, a spellchecker and the use of a little punctuation often
assists us in understanding what it is you are trying to ask (otherwise you
do rather come across as a 6 year old child who does not speak English). If
English is not your native tongue, there are multiple newsgroups in almost
every language option where you can have your questioned answered in your
native language and it may be easier for you to access these.

Iron Feliks

I think it is somehow amusing that people want to blame everything except
their own ignorance. These are the same people who spend hundreds of
dollars to have their car towed to the shop because a spark plug wire became
disconnected. I could blame MS for the fact that something as complex as
Vista does not come with a thick manual. Then, I remember that most people
never read the manual!

The original poster didn't have an issue. He just wanted to bash Vista.
Your newsgroup name indicates you don't like Vista, so may I ask what your
purpose in hanging out here is?

When a new OS is released, there will always be issues that arise because
hardware and software vendors are not always on the same page as the
producer of the OS. The same problem occurs with every new Linux kernel.
There is always an initial outcry "my <whatever> stopped working".

Your reference to "non-techies", makes me ask why so many people choose
ignorance as a way of life?

Cari, I have posted here 2 or three times ! Look on the forum post. Left High
and dry Each and everytime. And for those who think its a simple rant, then
why all the same problems as everyone else. Problems with Network printing ?
I admit I'm no Pro but I am not a Novice Either. I do setup networks with no
problems.

Cari to say it all again.......
Laptop = Vista Home Premium, Networkname = MSHOME, Printer Sharing On
Desktop = XP Media Center Home, Networkname = MSHOME, Printer and Files
Shared ( Can share , delete, copy files, but can not access printer )

Get "ACCESS DENIED " when trying to print from Laptop to Desktop.
There are No Passwords assigned as I am the Administrator on both Machines.
Have tried the \\computer\printername\ option to no avail.

Again look further down the post and you will see where I was left high and
dry with no answers.

Now if you think you have a solution then please let me know.
Thank you

Cari \(MS-MVP\)

In the Properties of the printer (on the MCE PC) is i9900 the Shared name of
the printer? I have an MCE 2005 with an i950 on the USB port (as well as a
Lexmark Optra S on the parallel).... again, no UserNames or Passwords and my
Vista PCs can see both OK... the Optra installed automatically, the i950
shared when I installed it on the Vista but said it needed a driver
update.... there is an update for that printer on the Canon website but no
info as to whether the update is for the Vista PC or the XP PC, so I
installed it on both and now it seems to be fine.

Because you are posting on the forums, as opposed to the Newsgroups, some
people do get lost.... if you open Windows Mail on the Vista PC, you will
see they are already set up for the Microsoft Newsgroups. It's a lot
quicker and easier to find responses through these.

Is UAC enabled or disabled on the Vista PC?

On the Vista PC, what are you Network settings? (found in the Network and
Sharing Center)

I'm presuming since you say MSHome this is not a Domain (and set to Private
Network)...

in mine: Network Discovery: On
File Sharing: On
Public folder sharing: On
Printer sharing: On
Password protected sharing Off
Media Sharing On

Let's go through it one step at a time and find out where the hitch is.....

It was i9900, I have renamed it to CANONPRINTER and still No acccess. It can

trying to connect to it.

What are the security settings on the printer shared from the XP Media
Center machine?

Printer, Properties, Security

Verify Everyone is allowed Print rights.

Also on the XP machine, verify that the Guest account is enabled since you
do not require passwords (it sounds like it already is).

Also from the Vista machine, you should be able to view the directory
contents of the print$ share on the XP machine
dir \\XPmachinename\print$
If you do not get the directory list then you will need access to this to
get the driver files.

Again Just How do I "access" this directory ?

I do have an Update.
I have set My complete Drive C: on My XP Desktop to allow Sharing. It Now
allows me to connect to the printer and print. But I know this is not the
best solution to this problem.

Why would this be the case ? And how do I get to the Point where my networks
main Drive is not wide open ? I only Want To Share the printer, not the
complete Drives contents.

You are correct Guest account is enabled.

Final Update.
After Setting the Complete Drive C: on the XP Machine to be shared I was
able to get the printer working. Once the Printer was installed on the Vista
Laptop, I then reset the Drive C: on my XP Desktop back to unshared. And now
everything is working. This is a horrible work around and risk security
issues if you are not careful.

Anyway it now works.

I think the issue is with the print$ share that the client connects to in
order to get the print drivers from the "server".

On the Vista machine open a cmd (DOS) windows
then remotely obtain the directory structure of the xp machine print$ share.

dir \\XPMACHINE\print$

color
IA64
W32ALPHA
w32x86
WIN40

If you get access denied, then that was the problem. The print$ share
points to \windows\system32\spool\drivers

Hoping someone here can help out. I have the above NEC Laser printer and
love it. But unfortunately, Vista isn't reconizing the printer. I've been
on NEC's website for product support and I'm told that they are not
developing a driver for Vista. The printer worked fine with XP. Is there
anyway around this? This printer cost me over $1000 so I really wanna be
able to use it with Vista. Thank you.
