I got my WIN XP installed and patched with all security.
How do I protect the dlls and ensure the dll cache has the right version. I
forgot to do sfc right after install from CD

sfc /scannow won't do any good as it will ask for the XP Pro CD and the
system has been updated, right?

Actually, the SFC will detect the service pack level and ask for the
location of the service packs installation files.

I haven't had to use SFC for quite some time now, but, if I remember
correctly, it gives one the option of leaving newer files in place.

Adding to what Bruce said:

SFC should take care of everything. Even the Windows Update hotfixes
maintain a copy of the DLLs in the DLLCache folder. The older versions are
kept in the respective $NTUninstall_KBnnnnnn folders.

This is the same in case of Windows Installer 3.1. The older versions are
kept in the following folder in case you want to uninstall the update:

C:\Windows\$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$

As you can see the DLLCache folder will hold the latest versions of each
module.

That was a significant problem in Windows 9X, but XP handles it
automatically. You no longer have to manually force an update to sfc's data
repository.

thanks for everyone. Unfortunately , the cache has been cleared, so I guess
I just have to download manually all the updates after the SP2.

Glad to hear but it was already purged as a result of my ignorance after I
was getting prompted for the Install CD repeatedly
