SFC /Scannow Question

J

Jack Gillis

I am running XP Home-SP2 and just ran SFC /Scannow. It kept asking me
to insert the XP SP2 CD. I didn't want to go to the next room and dig
the CD out of the files so I just decided to try to quit the task using
Task Manager/End Task but it wouldn't stop. Went to lunch and when I
returned it was still just sitting there asking me to insert the CD. I
finally broke down and got the CD and inserted it. SFC completed fine.

I 'google grouped' the problem looking for a soulution but the articles
I found did not provide an answer to my question which is:

Is there a way to abandon SFC /Scannow without rebooting when this
situation comes up again?

Thank you.

Yes.

Right click on the SFC entry on the Taskbar » close.

You could use Task Manager - hit CTL-ALT-DEL, look for SFC in Processes,
highlight and End process.

BTW is this an installation made from a recent XP CD that *includes*
SP2? I would not have expected either that it would ask for the one
that installs SP2 on an existing system (the files have been put on Hard
disk) or indeed that it would be able to extract components from it

Thanks, Alex.

No, it is an installation made from the original, 'out of the box' CD.
However, I do have an SP2 slipstreamed CD I use for repair/installs. I
did a repair install from this CD a few weeks ago.

One other thing, When I run SFC /scannow. I get two instances of it on
the task bar and in task manager. I can't end it from Task Manager but
can end it by right clicking on an instance in the task bar and choosing
'close.'

No big deal. I don't think I have run SFC /scannow more than two or
three time since installing XP way back yonder.

There is a file that needs to be added to the slipstreamed CD to stop it from asking for the SP 2 CD. From http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/ "If you're Windows XP files are already "slipstreamed" with a service pack you must also copy the win51ic.SPx or win51ip.SPx file.
This will prevent the CD asking "put the SPx CD into drive A:" during install."
