My SFC /SCANNOW tells me to insert my WIN XPSP1 Professional CD.

The problem is I only have WIN XP HOME Edition upgrade. Therefore, I cannot
check my system files. I know there is a fix for this but I cant remember
what it is. Would someone be so kind as to let me know what it is or the URL
where it can be found please? Thanks in advance.

Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Point the path to the install drive (or directory). Here that is, simply, H:\

There may be an alternate or additional entry as well. Search for Sourcepath

Put WinCD in default installation Drive and then issue
the sfc command

This seems to arise from a bug in SFC: if the CD is not right there and
it has to ask, it asks for Pro regardless. It is usually sufficient to
have the CD in the drive, and exit its autorun, before running the SFC

Just put your disk in and then continue. The files should still be in the
same directory. Good luck.

Sorry. Doesn't work that way when it says you have XP Pro when you only ever
had Home.

Sorry, Alex but that isn't the case, mate. When it thinks PRO is on the
system, it wont work until you correct it. I have had this prob before and
corrected it but I forgot what the fix was.

Have you checked for SourePath in the registry? There may be one or two
entries that are incorrect. Point the install sourcepath to the drive or
hard disk location of the initial install. Here that's simply H:\. If
the files reside on the PC it may instead be the i386 directory (folder).

Caution! Mistakes in editing the registry can cause XP to fail.

Doing more registry checking, I noted the servicepacksourcepath was set to
the CD drive's I386 folder which is obviously incorrect and that the actual
service pack files folder on C drive didn't exist at all. I have a laptop
currently deceased and awaiting a new motherboard that uses XP. It has an
image file on a spare drive on this computer so I am restoring just the
Servicepackfiles from that image to C on this computer, keeping fingers
crossed and hoping for the best. I will change registry to match that,
reboot and see what happens.

The FULL answer to this problem is as follows. In registry:

1) SourcePath must be the CD drive letter. In my case, it is F so Sourcepath
must be F:\

2) ServicePackSourcepath must be C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles

3) SericepackCachePath must be c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\ServicePackCache

Your CD must be in your drive of course and on C drive the actual
c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\ServicePackCache must exist with those files in
it. In my case, that folder on C didn't exist which is the whole problem in
the end.

Thanks all for the help offered!
