Severe XP Web Server Response issue - External O.K. - Internal aproblem!

J

J. D. B.

Folks, I am really frustrated by this. I have a network of three PCs at
home. Two are XP and one is Linux. They are all connected to a Netgear
wirless router/hub. On the one XP machine, I run a mail/web server. The
Linux and XP machines are just for general PC usage. Everything was
working fine up until a month ago when performance from one machine to
another machine degraded to a snail's pace. In other words, if I tried
to access any of the websites from by XP personal desktop to the
webserver, it went to a crawl. However, if I went to the office and
tried to access the same website, it was as speedy as normal as still is
if accessing the web/mail sites from the "outside" - it is only when I
try to access the websites from my own home PCs does it become an issue.

I can't think of anything that was changed that could have caused this.
Router/hub was not changed, that's for sure, and I even went through a
reconfigure of the router/hub and then even did a reload to the settings
that I saved when I did the initial configuration. Nothing changes.
I've turned off the firewall - no change.

What can be causing this problem? Any ideas? It's really puzzling that
the performance is only an issue internal to my home, but not external -
you'd think it would be just the opposite. BTW, I am not accessing the
websites via local host - I am accessing them just like any website -
www.myhost.com

Suggestions would be most appreciated!

Try resetting your router. See the following web site for instructions:

Try changing your DNS server(s) and see if that works.... try using the same
ones you use at work.

Have you looked at the HOSTS file on your workstation and placed the ip
address of your web server in there? That might speed access up as it would
eliminate a DNS lookup.

A better question is why you'd choose to run a web server on XP when you say
you have a Linux box on your LAN? A LAMP server would be far better as a
web server than using a Windoze web server.

Yes, I did that. The delay is not coming from the DNS lookup, something
is just stalling it within the network.

Why use XP? Because that's the OS that the Instantserver software runs
on and it runs very well - well externally that is. Instantserver is an
easy to use and administer program written on top of Apache.

The internal network used to run fine. Without any reason or
explanation, it went to a crawl - but on as far as accessing the
websites/email/FTP to the "server". Accessing shared folders and
exchanging files that way is just as fast as ever.
