Several problems

L

limey

1. I have just installed Firefox but got a popup window from Microsoft
saying that I was "low on virtual memory". Internet Explorer is still on
my computer - should I remove it, and how? And if I install Thunderbird, a)
will I crash, and b) if not, how do I uninstall OE?

2. Even before the Firefox installation, I have been suddenly been unable
to open .eml files - either sent to me by others as attachments, or stored
in My Documents.

3. When in OE newsgroups, if I try to block an offensive sender I get the
popup (as usual) that all messages have been put on the "blocked senders"
list - but I don't get the message that they have been removed, so they
still remain.

Would anyone have suggestions, please? Something's gone wacky.

That wasn't from microsoft; it's a spoof. Ignore it. You can't
actually remove IE; it's part of the system.

Replying to point 1: No, do not un-install Internet Explorer. Having 2 different browsers is good in case 1 or the other is not usable or somehow corrupted.
Plus you need I.E. to do online visits (on-occasional-demand) at Windows Update or Microsoft Update.

The low on virtual memory is not in itself fatal. It means the Windows memory paging file neeeded increasing at that moment.
Do you know how many programs you had running at the time?
Do you know how much physical RAM memory this pc has?

No, I'm afraid not.

512 MB
Thank you for responding!

Would you have any thoughts about item #3?

512 MB should be more than sufficent for many people. Only if you get persistent low virtual memory, would you need to look at tweaking the pagefile size.

On #3 - your issue in newgroups & Outlook Express, and removing blocked senders' messages:

The setting to auto-delete newsgroup messages from blocked senders is buried in the system registy at this location
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-some-value}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\Block Senders\News\Actions\000

where XXXX----some-value is really a series of numbers & letters unique to a particular Identity (user account).

If you are totally new to Regedit, or are lightly experienced with it, please do NOT go further.

If you have a moderatly good experience level with Regedit:
1) Using Regedit, be sure to first make a backup copy of the registry.
Go to Sart | Run | Regedit <enter>
In Registry Editor, select My Computer (on left tree view) by clicking once,
then choose File , Export. This will begin a dialog to save a copy of the whole registry.
Give it a name. It has a .reg extension.

2) Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities
then determine your ID

3) click successive sub-keys to get to \Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\Block Senders\News\Actions\000

Look at the value of Type on the right-hand frame. If it is already set to 7, then change it to 8. Otherwise, change the value to 7.
You make the change by double clicking Type. Then make change and press OK.

Exit out of Regedit. You'd then logoff and log back in to Windows.

Again, if you have no experience with Regedit please do not make changes on your own, since an inadvertent miskey can lead to your not being able to use the system normally.

Although I have had a little experience with Regedit, I am less than
confident about my skill level. I shall, however, save the info for my more
computer savvy son to read. Right now, I'll just forget about killfiling
jerks.

Thank you for your help, Maurice. I appreciate it.
