Setup with Symantec Norton 2004 Internet Security

I have Symantec Norton Internet Security 2004 installed on my computer. I
have a user account which I use day-to-day, in addition to the administrator
account. I have been in correspondence with Symantec Technical Support
about a problem I am experiencing with their Live Update facility and we
have narrowed the issue down to a point where they are of the opinion that
the problem is due to my operating system default settings. More
particularly, there is difficulty in downloadeing and installing Security
URL updates.

The following extract from the latest Symantec E-mail defines the problem:

In your message you said:
if I log on to my computer using my normal user account, I am still
prompted to download the 24+Mb Security URL update file. But, if I log on
as Administrator, I get the message "All Symantec products and components on
your computer are up-to-date".

Alan, I understand from your message the issue you are facing. This could be
due to windows permission issue. By default, Windows 2000 assigns certain
restrictive permissions when installing Norton Internet Security (NIS) under
an administrative account. To resolve the issue, please contact Microsoft
Technical Support".

I have not been able to find any help in the Microsoft Support knowlege
base. Can you help please?

It is possible that using a regular user account may prevent you from using Live
Update, but the fact that there is a discrepancy in whether the product is up to date
would be an issue with the application in my opinion. Apparently it has cached or
stored some info that tells you that a update is ready to download even if it has
already been installed. Most likely your package is up to date if that is what it
tells you when you are logged on as an administrator. You could download filemon and
regmon from SysInternals and invoke first filemon using ruanas and administrator
credentials just before trying to run Live Update while logged on as a regular user
and then looking in filemon's log to see where access was denied and then giving
users modify permissions to that folder or file and trying again. You may be able to
change permissions so that Live Update will run as a regular user. I did that on one
of my computers a while back and I think I had to change only one permission in the
all users folder if I remember correctly. --- Steve
