Setup needs to know where the Windows XP files are located

setup from a clean system. Used to be Windows Me, but
since it was rebooting on boot-up, even in safe mode, we
had to format the hard drive.

Now running winnt.exe from the /i386 subdirectody of the
install CD, we do get setup to start. First thing it does
is say:

Setup needs to know where the Windows XP files are located.
Enter the path where the Windows XP files are to be found

We just press Enter, leaving the text box with the default
content (..\i386), but windows cannot find its files
apparently. Setup stops right there.

What are we supposed to do?

You probably need to use the proper switches to assign the
sourcepath.
You need to open a CMD prompt and navigate to the i386
folder and type out
WINNT /?
or
WINNT32 /?
to get the help output.

Here are the headers only:

winnt32 [/checkupgradeonly] [/cmd:command_line] [/cmdcons]
[/copydir:i386\folder_name] [/copysource:folder_name]
[/debug[level]:[filename]] [/dudisable]
[/duprepare:pathname] [/dushare:pathname] [/m:folder_name]
[/makelocalsource] [/noreboot] [/s:sourcepath]
[/syspart:drive_letter] [/tempdrive:drive_letter] [/udf:id
[,UDB_file]] [/unattend[num]:[answer_file]]

WINNT [/s[:sourcepath]] [/t[:tempdrive]]
[/u[:answer file]] [/udf:id[,UDF_file]]
[/r:folder] [/r[x]:folder] [/e:command] [/a]

Why don't you boot off of the CDROM drive to perform the install? Sounds
like you are trying to kick off the installation using a DOS floppy.

If you cannot boot off the CDROM, then you can use the Windows XP floppies
available on-line at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=55820edb-5039-4955-
bcb7-4fed408ea73f&DisplayLang=en
(note: this link goes to the WinXP Professional boot disks page. If you
have XP Home, you will need to go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads to
get the home edition boot disks)

Apologies, please ignore, I thought it was a response to
the thread immediately above with a similar header.

<<Sounds like you are trying to kick off the installation
using a DOS floppy.>> That's correct, a Windows Me rescue
disk.

I would rather boot from the DVD as you suggest. I have a
MSDN (you know, Universal subscription) DVD. I want to
install XP Home, but there are several XP versions on the
DVD. The tree path to the XP Home setup is something like
e:\English\WindowsXP\Home\setup.exe

Is there a way to boot from such a DVD?

Otherwise, do I have to download those 6 floppies and boot
from them, or should I follow the suggestion from the
other poster (run winnt or winnt32)?

If anybody knows which parameters I have to use with the
winnt or winnt32 commands, that would help me a lot!!!

Many thanks.
