setup in maintenance mode

For some reason, whenever I startup Word, it says, "There are no Office
Assistant character files present on the system. Please run Setup in
maintenance mode and install at least one character."

What the heck is going on?

Any ideas why it is doing this.

Nor can I access the help file any longer.

Have you tried running setup to repair your Office installation? You might
want to run some hard disk diagnostics first.

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=839132 "'There are no Office
Assistant character files present' error message when you start an
Office XP program" for one possible cause of the error message. If that
doesn't apply to your situation, then you're going to have to give us a
better explanation of the problem.

Do you by chance have more than one version of Word on your system? Or
are you running Word 2000?

I have multiple version on my system and I get this all the time when
I attempt to open Word 2000 and then move to a newer version. I think
the problem has to do with the different coding in the versions. But
if you rerun the CD and add/subtract one of the office assistants,
it'll fix the problem. Does for me...until I open 2k again! There may
be a better fix, but I've never bothered looking for it.

However, since you also mention a blank help...you might be able to
fix the problem with this article. Others have fixed the blank help
problem with this. I don't get the blank help problems...but it might
be tied together???

Hope this helps...
