setup hangs when formatting c:

Win2000 Server install on Dell PowerEdge2500 with RAID
SCSI Controller.

After configuring the partitions and telling setup to
install windows on c: it goes to the foramt
screen. "Setup is formatting..." and it hangs on 0%.

Has anybody ever seen this behavior?

How did you install the mass storage controller driver?

Once the mirror (or other raid) has been built boot the Windows 2000 setup
disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your raid
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

I'm actually having the same problems on a DELL 4300 with a Perc2
controller and 5 18g scsi drives. Steps I've done so far:

1. Created 4 gig and 60 gig containers. 4 gig is the boot or 00
container.
2. Created a Utility partition in the 4 gig. Funny part is that I can
not access the Container Configuration Utility from within the Utility
partition (hangs at a DOS prompt). I can only access the CCU at
bootup by hitting CTRL-A. It warns me that I won't be able to use the
container for booting until the SCRUB is done. How can I tell when
the SCRUB is done?
3. Boot to a Windows 2000 CD. Hit F6 when it prompts me to and load
the most recent Perc2 drivers.
4. It then offers me 2 "drives" to which to install Windows 2000 to.
One is a 4 gb drive that has an unknown partition on it (the Utility
partition) and the rest blank. I highlight the blank portion of the
4gig, then press enter to install. It subsequently gives me the:

"Setup is formatting"

gasbar and is now stuck at 0%

Any ideas?

regards
Luke

Turns out, we just needed firmware upgrades.
I contacted the original poster of this thread to find out
if he had solved his problem. Apparently he had.
It took a firmware upgrade of the Perc2 card to do the
trick for him (and me!).
