setup cannot upgrade to xp from evaluation copy of windows ?

when attempting to upgrade a Win2K machine to XP Pro an error message
immediately appears saying 'Setup cannot upgrade your current installation to
Windows XP. Your copy of Windows XP does not support upgrading from an
evaluation copy of Windows.' but the machine we are trying to upgrade is
Dell that shipped with Win2K on it. it has been wacked and reinstalled a few
times, but not sure how this would affect this upgrade. any help getting
around this so we could do an upgrade instead of a complete reinstall would
be greatly appreciated. TIA ...
