Hi, when I turned on my WindowsXp Professional system, I received an error
message advising that some Windows files are unstale and that I needed insert
my WindowsXp in the CD ROM Drive. When I placed the Windows CD in the Drive,
the error meessage went away and a new message box appeared advising me
"Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is
newer than the version on the CD. Warning: If you decide to delete the newer
version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files
and settings cannot be recovered.". I would appreciate your help as to how
to proceed / what to do next? FYI, the WindowsXp CD contains SR1 and I
downloaded and installed SR2 on my system. Thank you for your help, Bob

Hi,

Can you boot at all, even just safe mode? If so, then you should run sfc
/scannow and that should resolve it. Doing that will get the system to draw
the right version of the files from the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386
folder instead of the CD. The error message is basically telling you that if
you proceed with the repair install, you will have to reinstall SP2.

The reason you are getting the error is when you put the xp cd into your
cd-rom is because of SP2. SP2 is a 'newer' version than your current xp cd
with SP1.
When a new complete Service pack comes out it is wise to create what is
called a 'slipstream' copy (assuming you have the retail version of your
original xp cd, of course, rather than a recovery disk and you have a full
download of SP2 on your hard drive) This, in effect updates the 'copy' you
make of xp to the newer version. Visit my website at
http://freepspace.virgin.net/john.freelanceit/index.htm
click on the Win XP Faq button and take a look at Question 83 for details of
slipstreaming.
You could try entering safe mode by restarting your pc and repeatedly
tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. When the menu appears select you
could first try clicking on 'last known good configuration' and see if your
pc boots ok. If it doesn't then reboot again and, this time, click safe
mode.
If windows is asking for your windows cd the only thing you can do (in the
absence of a slipstreamed SP2 copy) is to uninstall SP2 from safe mode,
reboot your pc and then insert your xp cd so that the files can be replaced.
After they have been replaced you would then have to reinstall SP2.
Does windows specifically say which files are unstable?

Thanks for your prompt reply Rick, yes I am able to operate my system
althought it is very VERY sluggish! I am not exactly sure of what you
suggested when you wrote "run sfc > /scannow"? I went to Start and typed in
"sfc/scannow" but that was not recognized. Should I start the system in Safe
Mode and try Run->sfc/scannow from there? Thank you again for your help.

Hi Bob,

From either mode, but watch your spelling. It should be:

sfc^/scannow

where ^ is a space.

Thanks guys, I forgot to put a SPACE between the backslash in SFC / SCANNOW
thank you. I ran SCANNOW and was asked to REENTER maybe 10 times but the
SCANNOW finally completed. I noticed that my system (2.4MHz processor, 1G
RAM,.....) is still extremely sluggish (it takes almost 2 minutes to access
the Internet after I press the IE icon on this sytem and lieterally a few
seconds when I do this on my other , less functional, system). Any
suggestions? Thanks again, Bob
P.S.-is there a an easy way to FIND / LOCATE the message that I posted? The
Community Newsgroup does not include a TIME stamp and I can't find a FIND /
SEARCH by User ID

You haven't given us enough information about your system to get a
specific diagnosis. Computer slowness can be caused by malware or
hardware failures. The hard drive might be using the wrong data
transfer mode. Or lots of other issues.

The reason you are having difficulties with finding your posts is that
you are using the web interface. Since you are using the web interface,
you may not realize that this is really a newsgroup. You will get far
more out of this resource if you learn to use a newsreader. There are
many good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use Outlook Express
since you already have it.

Hi my 2.4MHz processor, 1G RAM,..... system is extremely sluggish (i.e. it
takes almost 2 minutes to access the Internet after I press the IE icon on
this system and literally a few seconds when I do this on my other, less
functional, system) so I ran SCANNOW but the system is still VERY slow. I
would appreciate any suggestions as what to do to improve the performance of
my system? Thank you, Bob

The reason for this sluggishness is that you may be running a lot of
background software.

Perform "msconfig" to disable all background software temporarily.

1. Click Start and select Run.
2. Type MSConfig and press Enter.
3. Click the Startup tab.
4. Click Disable All
5. Click OK.
6. Restart the system.

If you are getting a message "System Configuration Utility you are using the
selective startup for troubleshooting your system", I suggest you check the
check box in that window and click OK. This occurs if you are using the
Selective startup option and not using the normal startup to reduce the
number of startup programs.

If there is considerable improvement in speed, then it will be confirmed
that the issue is with background software. You may need to perform msconfig
again to re-enable some of the background programs like Antivirus/firewall
etc.
