Setting up wireless network with XP & Vista

[Newbie]

I've never set up a network before, and I just got a new laptop that has
Vista and I want to be able to share files between the new laptop and the old
laptop that has XP. I have an older Linksys Router that is at least 3 years
old. I can connect to the Internet with no problems through both laptops.

I'm wondering do I go through the Networking Wizard on the laptop using XP
or the Vista? What other pitfalls do I need to be aware of when setting up
this network?

The above is file and printer sharing in vista.
You'll have to run the fie sharing wuzard in XP as well
Any probs, post back here.

I am more worried about how you have set your wireless up.
Have you set security, to stop anybody stealing your bandwidth?

I am still having problems setting up my network. I went thru the wizard on
Vista and then it asked me to place the USB drive in the other computer and
run the network set up - but when I did that it said that the wizard cannot
find the info needed to set up the network. I've also tried to ping both
computers to see if they are connected and they definitely are NOT connected.


I went through the link that you posted and followed all of the steps but I
cannot see my other computer. They both have the same Workgroup name.

Also, you wondering about the security of my wireless network and it is
secure. It is not an open network and you need a password to get in.

If you have any other suggestions I would love them.

I'd see where you are right now, and diagnose the problem. Look at logs from
"browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config
workstation", from each computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and
follow instructions precisely (download browstat!) (observe how to run as admin
when opening a command window, in Vista):
